The ferry horn from the Pearl River slips under the arcade of Shamian Island just as the doorman in a maroon tunic pulls the brass handle for you, and the first thing you notice is the hush. Behind the white lattice screens of the 白天鹅宾馆 Báitiān’é Bīnguǎn the city’s noise drops away as if someone has drawn a curtain, and beyond the lobby the river unfolds in long grey sheets toward the opposite bank. You stand a moment on the cool stone, smelling jasmine from the courtyard and the faint mineral tang of the water, and you understand why this place has hosted presidents and poets alike — and it has been doing so since 1983, when it opened on the quiet colonial terraces of 沙面岛 Shāmiàn Dǎo as China’s first truly five-star hotel.
The Rooms
The White Swan was built with Hong Kong magnate Henry Fok and designed to bring the Pearl River indoors. Its famous indoor waterfall, the “Flowing Waterfall” Liúshuǐ Jí, still spills down a three-storey rock garden at the heart of the building, and the whole house is arranged so that nearly every corridor opens onto a view of the 珠江 Zhūjiāng. What makes it special is not opulence but composure: a Guangzhou institution that has aged like a good piece of mahogany, polished rather than replaced.
All 520 rooms and suites look either to the river or to the garden city, and the smallest standard room still runs a generous thirty square metres. The Deluxe River-view King is the one to book if the water calls to you: sixty square metres of pale timber, a marble bath you can soak in while the ferries trace their slow arcs outside, and a window seat made for the dawn. The Club Premier Suites climb to ninety square metres on the upper floors, with butler service and a private lounge that serves the best afternoon tea on the island.
What Makes It Special
The dining is the other reason people return. The Michelin-starred Jade River Yùshuǐ Xiāng serves refined Cantonese dim sum beneath hanging lanterns, while the River Café lays out an international buffet against floor-to-ceiling glass. Step outside and you are on Shamian’s bougainvillea-lined promenade, a ten-minute walk from the 沙面 Shāmiàn Catholic church and the curio shops of the old concession. The hotel runs a complimentary boat shuttle to the opposite bank, a small luxury that turns a crossing into an event.
Practicalities
Price. Around ¥1,180 to ¥2,200 a night for a standard or river-view room, rising past ¥3,500 for the larger river-view suites; festival periods and the Canton Fair climb higher still. Rates include breakfast on most packages — check which one you are buying, because the buffet alone is worth a fair amount.

From Baiyun International Airport it is about a 45-minute drive (37 km), or Metro Line 3 to 体育西路 then a transfer to Line 1. The hotel runs a complimentary boat shuttle across the river to the 黄沙 side, which is a more pleasant crossing than the bridge and takes about ten minutes.
