Guanshilou: a Terrace, a Pot of Tea and the View of the Stone

Yǐn yán: Guān shí lóu gāo, lù tái chá xù; yī yè qiū fēng, sòng rù rén jiā. — Guanshilou stands high, tea poured on the terrace; one night of autumn wind, sent into the room.

Guanshilou Homestay (观石楼民宿) is a three-star family-run stay at No. 101-1 Xiannü Road in Xiannvshan town — the bottom of the Xiannvshan price ladder in the three-star band, and the representative of a category the mountain runs on: the owner-operated guesthouse with a terrace, a tea table and a host who drives guests to the shuttle stop. The name — “the tower that views the stone” — is the karst habit of naming a building after what you can see from it.

Homestays on Xiannü Road live on repeat guests — Chongqing families who come up for the same two weeks every summer and book the same room a year ahead. The terrace is the amenity: tea, cards, and the evening coming down over the karst ridges. The host’s local knowledge — which shuttle, which trail, which fish house in Jiangkou — is the actual product; the room is where you sleep between using it.

flowcloud would say that the mountain’s homestays sell the host first and the bed second — and at Guanshilou the terrace is where the mountain does most of the talking anyway.
