Timber Lodges Under the Wuzhishan Canopy

The cabin is on piles, four metres up, which puts the floor level with the middle of the tree trunks and the window level with the canopy. Nothing about the room tells you what the weather is doing, because you cannot see the sky through the leaves, only a general brightness moving across the wall of green. Then it rains. Not a sprinkling but a Hainan rainforest downpour, arriving all at once like a bucket emptying on the roof, and for twenty minutes the whole world is noise. The stream below the cabin doubles within the hour and the frogs start. Twenty minutes after that, the rain stops, the light comes back up, and the forest releases the smell of wet leaf litter, which is the actual reason people pay to sleep in a place like this. This is the timber-lodge belt of 五指山 Wǔzhǐshān, the small purpose-built cabins and rainforest farm stays scattered along the mountain’s lower slopes in 五指山市 Wǔzhǐshān Shì, and it is the nearest thing in Hainan to sleeping inside the reserve.

The properties in this category are small — a handful of cabins on a forested slope, run by a family or a single operator, sometimes attached to a 庄园 zhuāngyuán, the country-estate model that has become the fashionable way to run rural lodging in Hainan. They share a set of characteristics. They are built in or immediately beside 海南热带雨林国家公园 Hǎinán rèdài yǔlín guójiā gōngyuán, the national rainforest park, on land that was already cleared or farmed before protection was extended. They are timber-framed, with large glazed walls because the forest is the amenity. They are almost always at the end of a narrow lane, with no street lighting and no shops. And they are run by people who will cook for you, which matters, because the nearest restaurant may be twenty minutes away and closed at eight. What they are not is a resort. There is no spa, no pool and no manager in a suit; the person who checks you in is often the person who cooks your dinner.

Practicalities

Price. Expect ¥300 to ¥700 for a cabin for two, with breakfast sometimes included and dinner usually extra at around ¥80 to ¥120 a head. Rates barely move for occupancy but move a lot for season: the cool, dry months from November to March are the busy ones, and the wet summer months — which are dramatic rather than bad, if you like rain — bring the price down.

Address. The lodges cluster on the approaches to 水满乡 Shuǐmǎn Xiāng and in the valleys that run off the main mountain road, including the 方诺寨 Fāngnuòzhài area, all within 五指山市 Wǔzhǐshān Shì. The pattern to look for is a property whose address mentions the national park or the village rather than a street.

Rooms. Cabins sleep two, occasionally three with a platform bed. You get a real bed, a kettle, an electric blanket or a thick quilt for the winter nights, a hot shower with mountain pressure, and windows that do not need curtains because there is nobody to see in. Sound insulation is limited in every sense: expect to hear rain, frogs, cicadas and, at dawn, a great many birds. Bring a headtorch and a pair of dry shoes.

Getting there. Drive — the lodges are strung along the mountain roads between 五指山市 Wǔzhǐshān Shì and 水满 Shuǐmǎn, and some of the last stretches are single-lane. A car from the city takes forty minutes to an hour depending on how far up the property sits; taxis will take you but you will want to arrange your return trip when you arrive, because there is no passing traffic.

flowcloud would say that the attraction of a cabin in this forest is not silence, since the rainforest at night is one of the loudest places on earth, but the absence of anything man-made in the noise.

Where to stay: pick a lodge with a kitchen and a host on site, and pick it for the walking rather than for the room. Ask where the nearest trail starts, how far the property is from the park gate and whether the lane is drivable in the rain. If a booking site shows you a pool and a lobby, you are looking at the resort belt, which is a different article.
