Base Camp of the Dream Mountain: Xinchang Stays

大佛脚下禅房静,天姥云开入客窗 Dàfó jiǎoxià chánfáng jìng, Tiānmǔ yún kāi rù kè chuāng – Quiet zen rooms under the Great Buddha; when Tianmu’s clouds part they enter the guest window

新昌住宿 Xīnchāng Zhùsù the stays of 新昌县 Xīnchāng Xiàn Xinchang serve the mountain county where Tang poetry’s dream routes converge – a tight valley town on the 新昌江 Xīnchāng Jiāng Xinchang River, the sixth-century Buddha of 大佛寺 Dàfó Sì the Great Buddha Temple keeping the town’s spiritual anchor, and the 天姥山 Tiānmǔ Shān trailheads waiting up the old post road. Hikers, pilgrims and poets’ descendants all bed down here.

The town’s hotel strip runs along the river and the temple approach: business chains for the trailhead logistics, family hotels by the old streets, and the temple-side guesthouses whose mornings start with bell sound instead of traffic. The county prices itself for hikers – early breakfasts, packed lunches on request, and taxi stands that know the word 班竹 Bānzhú Banzhu.

The base works for both mountains and Buddha: dawn runs to the Banzhu trailhead for the Tianmu circuit, afternoons descending to the temple’s grotto Buddha and stone gardens, and evenings back in town for a bowl of 芋饺 yùjiǎo taro dumplings. Mist days strand hikers happily – the town’s teahouses fill with wet boots and the county shrugs, used to weather writing its own itinerary.

Beyond the valley beds, the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City keeps other bases for the around-the-region days: 市区住宿 Shìqū Zhùsù the canal-quarter rooms of the old city, 柯桥住宿 Kēqiáo Zhùsù the lake-tower hotels of the fabric city, 诸暨住宿 Zhūjì Zhùsù the riverside stays of the falls county, or 嵊州住宿 Shèngzhōu Zhùsù the opera-town rooms next door – four more doors into the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City. With beds settled, our Shaoxing travel map fills the days.

The Stays

  • The splurge tier is the river-and-temple view hotels by the Great Buddha approach: mountain-mist breakfasts, bell-timed mornings, parking for the trail runs – the serene pick.
  • The character tier is the old-street family hotels and temple-side guesthouses: wooden stairs, river windows, hosts who draw the Banzhu trail on paper – the pilgrim pick.
  • The value tier is the station-side chains in the valley center: earliest breakfasts in the prefecture, gear-drying rooms, taxis that know the mountain gates – the hiker pick.

flowcloud would say a Xinchang night is a mountain county banking its mist: the Buddha keeping his grotto dark, dream-mountain clouds queuing for tomorrow’s sunrise, and a valley pillow hearing the river rehearse Li Bai’s favorite sound. All checked November 2026.

Where to stay: Xinchang splits its beds between the temple quarter and the mountain road – town hotels own the Great Buddha mornings, Tianmu homestays own the pilgrim-trail dawns, valley lodges own the Nineteen Peaks drives, and every tier puts yujiao on the dinner table. All checked November 2026.
