Staying in Yalong Bay
The first thing you see when you reach the crest of the hill above 亚龙湾 is a long crescent of white sand that curves for seven kilometres against water so clear it shades from turquoise to blue to deep green. It does not look like anywhere in China. It looks like somewhere you would need to get on a plane for, which is exactly the point.
This is 亚龙湾 (Yàlóng Wān), Yalong Bay, and it is the place that put Sanya on the map as a beach destination. For decades it has been the default answer to the question “where should I stay in Sanya,” and it is still the most beautiful single strand of beach on the island — and the most expensive stretch of real estate for a bed.
The Beach That Built Sanya
Yalong Bay is about twenty-five minutes east of central Sanya city, a broad crescent that faces south into the South China Sea. It is a 国家级旅游度假区 (guójiā jí lǚyóu dùjià qū, a national tourism resort zone), and it has one of the finest sandy beaches in Asia — fine, pale, packed sand that stays firm underfoot, and clear water that you can wade out into for a long way before it deepens.
There is a bit of a phrase that gets repeated about it — 天下第一湾 (tiānxià dì yī wān), “the number one bay under heaven.” It is marketing, but it is marketing that generations of visitors have agreed with.
The bay was the first part of Sanya to be developed as a resort area, and it set the template. The beachfront is lined with a strip of large hotels, most of them five-star, each with its own private patch of sand and its own water-sports concession. Between the hotels and the beach there is a green belt of palms and lawns that the public can walk along, and this is the key thing to understand about the bay: it is a resort strip, not a town.
The Staying Is the Point
Yalong Bay is not a place you go to see. It is a place you go to stay. The whole bay is organised around the hotels, and your decision here is almost entirely a hotel decision.
There are, by rough count, a couple of dozen large hotels strung along the beachfront, and they range from the grand old names of the 1990s to newer, larger properties. What they have in common is that they are beachfront, they are big, and they are built for a holiday that happens inside the resort: pools, gardens, a private beach, multiple restaurants, kids’ clubs, and water-sports counters on the sand.
A few things to know when you pick one:
- Beachfront or not. Almost everything here is beachfront, but “beachfront” can mean a few metres to the sand or a walk across a garden. Check which you are getting.
- Newer is usually better for a pool. The older five-stars have smaller pools; the newer resorts have bigger, more elaborate pool complexes and better spa facilities.
- The south-facing rooms get the sun all day and the best light.
- Weekends and Chinese holidays fill up. Book ahead, and expect the highest prices of the entire Sanya year around Spring Festival.
The Beach Itself
The good news is that the beach is public and open, and it is genuinely beautiful. Even if you are not staying at one of the big beachfront hotels, you can come to Yalong Bay for the day, walk the public promenade through the palms, and swim in the water. The hotels’ private patches are separated, and there is the odd tension between resort guests and day visitors, but the public strip is wide and the sand is the same.
The water here is at its best in the morning, before the wind picks up and before the day-trippers arrive. It is also one of the better beaches in Sanya for swimming — the cove shape keeps the water calmer than the open coastline, and there is a gentle shelving that makes it easy for children.
Swimming, snorkelling, jet skis, parasail rides and banana boats are all on offer from the beach-side operators. Prices are not the cheapest in Sanya, but you are paying for the setting.
What It Is and Is Not
Here is the honest version. Yalong Bay is the most luxurious, most beautiful, and least “local” stretch of beach in Sanya.
If you want a beach holiday — a few days on a private stretch of sand, a good pool, good food, no need to leave the resort — Yalong Bay is the best place on the island. It is where you come to do nothing, beautifully.
If you want to be in the middle of the city, walking to a night market or a street-food stall, Yalong Bay will frustrate you. You are a good twenty-five minutes from central Sanya, and the strip of restaurants outside the hotels is thin. The resorts are self-contained, and dinner means the hotel.
There is also a thing worth knowing about the crowds. Yalong Bay is the most famous beach in Hainan, and it gets busy. It is still a big enough beach that it does not feel packed the way 大东海 does, but if you want an empty beach, come early or come in the low season.
A Quick Word on the Neighbouring Bay
Just up the coast from Yalong Bay is 太阳湾 (Sun Bay), a smaller, quieter cove tucked behind a headland. If Yalong Bay feels too big and too busy, Sun Bay is where you go for the same scenery with far fewer people — and a few very good, very private resorts. It is the insider’s answer to the beachfront question, and it is worth knowing about if you are weighing a stay here.
flowcloud would say that a bay with sand this good was never going to stay quiet, and that the only real question is whether you want to be at the centre of it or just off it — and that either way, the beach does the work.

A 7-kilometre crescent of fine sand facing the South China Sea, lined with a beachfront strip of large five-star resorts, each with a private beach and pools. Best for a self-contained beach holiday; the public promenade and beach are open to day visitors. Book ahead for weekends, holidays and especially Spring Festival. The finest sand and clearest water in Sanya, but the least local — the resorts are self-contained and central Sanya is a drive away. For a quieter alternative, consider neighbouring 太阳湾 (Sun Bay).
