Yangming Mountain Lodge in the Shuangpai Clouds

You wake up inside a cloud and this is not a figure of speech. The lodge at the top of 阳明山 Yángmíng Shān sits at about 1,350 metres, and on most spring and autumn mornings the cloud sea has formed below the ridge while you were asleep, so that when you open the curtain the valley is gone and there is nothing outside but white moving slowly past the window and the tops of two or three peaks standing out of it. The temperature is ten degrees below the town. The air smells of wet pine and cold stone. A room with a mountain-facing window costs ¥260–520, and a surprising number of them are booked by people from Changsha who have come specifically to sit still for two days.

阳明山 Yángmíng Shān is a massif in 双牌县 Shuāngpái Xiàn, about an hour and a half southwest of Yongzhou city, and its two attractions are botanical and spiritual rather than scenic in a dramatic sense. The first is the azaleas: ten mu of wild rhododendron, most of it the red 映山红 yìngshānhóng, which flowers through April and is billed, with the usual local enthusiasm, as the finest red in the world. The second is 万寿寺 Wànshòu Sì, a Buddhist temple on the ridge that goes back to the Song and was rebuilt repeatedly, associated with 秀峰禅师 Xiùfēng Chánshī, a Ming-era monk whose mummified body was once kept here and who is venerated as the seventh patriarch of the local lineage. The mountain’s whole identity is organised around the character 和 hé — harmony — which the local tourist board has turned into a slogan and which, to be fair, is a more accurate description of the place than most such slogans are.

The lodging is all on and below the summit ridge: a state-run hotel from the 1990s with large rooms and no charm, several newer timber lodges with balconies and underfloor heating, and a scatter of farmhouse rooms in the villages lower down. The newer lodges are the ones you want — they are designed for the cloud sea, meaning the windows are generous and face the right way.

What You Are Paying For

Price. ¥260–520 for a double at a ridge lodge, ¥120–200 for a farmhouse room in the villages below. The mountain hotel sits in the middle and is worth it only if the lodges are full.

Address. 阳明山国家森林公园 Yángmíng Shān Guójiā Sēnlín Gōngyuán, 双牌县 Shuāngpái Xiàn, 永州市 Yǒngzhōushì. The lodges cluster along the final approach road below 万寿寺 Wànshòu Sì.

Rooms. The new lodges have ten to forty rooms; ask for 观景房 guānjǐng fáng, a view room, and confirm that the view is downhill rather than into the hillside. Heating is the thing to check — at 1,350 metres, a room without it in April is miserable.

Getting there. No bus worth relying on. From 永州 Yǒngzhōu it is about 60 kilometres and 90 minutes by car, and from 双牌 Shuāngpái county town about 40 minutes. Taxis from Yongzhou will quote ¥250–350 one way; most guests drive or hire a car with a driver for the day.

What the Locals Know

Come for the last week of April. The azalea bloom is short and the lodges know it. Book two to three weeks ahead for that window and expect the price at the top of the range.

The cloud sea is a morning thing. It forms overnight and burns off by nine or ten. Set an alarm for half past five; the people who sleep in see a nice mountain and miss the reason they came.

Walk behind the waterfall. The falls below the temple have a path that runs behind the curtain, which is wet, loud and the single best thing on the mountain.

Bring a jacket in any season. The summit ridge is 1,350 metres and the temperature difference from the valley floor is not a marketing figure.

Where to Stay

Reserve by phone or through a Chinese platform; the lodges are small and the booking systems are informal. In the flowering fortnight, everything on the ridge is full and the overflow goes to the villages below, which is not a disaster — you will just have to drive up at five in the morning, and so will everyone else.

flowcloud would say that a mountain that has been a place of retreat for a thousand years is still doing the same job, and that the only thing that has changed is that the monk’s cell now has underfloor heating and a balcony, which on balance seems like progress.

Where to stay: 阳明山 (Yángmíng Shān), 双牌县 (Shuāngpái Xiàn), 永州市 (Yǒngzhōushì), 湖南 (Húnán). Ridge lodges ¥260–520, village rooms ¥120–200. About 90 minutes by car from 永州 (Yǒngzhōu). Ask for a downhill view room with heating, arrive before the azaleas finish in late April, and get up at 05:30 for the cloud.
