The 城区 chéngqū city core, 红塔区 Hóngtǎ Qū Hongta district, was built on tobacco money – this is 红塔山 Hóngtǎ Shān Hongtashan country and the home town of 聂耳 Niè’ěr Nie Er, who wrote the national anthem – and it shows in a modern, comfortable, faintly corporate town of square blocks, good restaurants and green hills. The bed stock is a workaday one: 商务酒店 shāngwù jiǔdiàn business hotels, 连锁酒店 liánsuǒ jiǔdiàn chain hotels and two or three big 星级 xīngjí star properties, spread around the 聂耳广场 Niè’ěr Guǎngchǎng Nie Er Square civic centre, the 高新区 gāoxīnqū high-tech zone and the stations.
The stock divides into three bands. The chain and light-business hotels, about 120-250 yuan worth confirming, are the honest backbone – clean rooms, lifts, parking and 24小时 èrshísì xiǎoshí hot water – and cluster around the 火车站 huǒchēzhàn station area and the 高新区 gāoxīnqū, which is where business travellers and transit nights actually sleep. The full-service 商务酒店 shāngwù jiǔdiàn hold the middle at about 200-450 yuan worth confirming, near 聂耳广场 Niè’ěr Guǎngchǎng and the old 红塔 Hóngtǎ centre, with bigger rooms, meeting floors and breakfast worth getting up for. The top band, about 400-800 yuan worth confirming, is a small handful of international-standard 星级 xīngjí properties aimed at corporate accounts and the 会议 huìyì trade, and their prices barely move by season because the town’s demand is meetings and transit, not tourism. Geography hardly matters – almost everything is inside a twenty- to thirty-minute drive of everything else worth confirming – so pick by parking and by your departure direction.
Practical shape: the city is a one-night-each-side base. Sleep here at both ends of a 抚仙湖 Fúxiān Hú, 哀牢山 Āiliáo Shān or 元江 Yuánjiāng loop, and trade the lake price band for a mid-band room with genuinely good food. 玉溪站 Yùxī Zhàn Yuxi station sits on the 昆玉河 Kūnyùhé line, roughly half an hour from 昆明南站 Kūnmíngnán Zhàn Kunming South station worth confirming, and the 客运站 kèyùnzhàn bus station runs through coaches south to 元江 Yuánjiāng and west to 新平 Xīnpíng worth confirming; by road the lake is about half an hour to an hour, 新平县城 Xīnpíng Xiànchéng about an hour and a half, and 元江 Yuánjiāng an hour and a half to two worth confirming. Weekday evenings are corporate and weekends are quiet, so weekend rates dip; if you are 自驾 zìjià, always book the parking space with the room. Skip the hotel breakfast and walk out: 玉溪 Yùxī eats on rice noodles, and 鳝鱼米线 shànyú mǐxiàn eel rice noodles is the local signature worth confirming, followed by an evening loop around 聂耳广场 Niè’ěr Guǎngchǎng, which is the town at its most itself.
