Orange Grove Farmstay

Out past the county town, where the roads narrow and the fields take over, the orange-grove farmstays (农庄) offer the quietest sleep in Zhongxian. These are working orchards first and lodgings second — you stay in a renovated farm building among the trees, with a muddy lane out front and a vegetable patch round the back. At fruit season the branches hang so low with tangerines that you can reach one from the doorway, and the keepers will hand you a basket and point you at the ripest row, then leave you to it while they go back to the pruning they were doing when you arrived.

The paths between the groves make for easy walking. A packed-earth trail loops through the orchard and out into the surrounding fields, past a pond where the family’s ducks fuss and a line of washing flaps in the river wind. It is flat, gentle ground — an hour’s slow loop brings you back to the farmhouse smelling of citrus, and there is always a thermos of tea waiting on the bench by the gate. Few guests bother with a plan; the orchard sets the pace, and on a warm afternoon the only scheduled event is the keeper’s call to come and eat.

Meals are the other reason to come. The keeper cooks from the plot — braised pork with fresh tangerine peel, greens pulled that morning, an egg from the yard hens — and lays it on a low table where the cats come begging and the light comes in sideways through the fruit trees. A night here runs around 160 to 280 yuan with two home-style meals, and the rooms, though plainly furnished, are warm and clean with thick quilts against the cold valley nights. When the fruit is in, you leave with a string bag of oranges the keeper pressed on you at the gate, heavier than you expected and sweeter than anything in the city.

It is a stay measured in small things: the weight of a full basket, the smell of peel in the cooking, the way the light goes long and gold across the rows before it fails. The farmstay has none of the city hotel’s comforts and makes no claim to them, but for travellers who want Zhongxian at its slowest — orchards instead of avenues, a wood fire instead of a thermostat — it is the right kind of plain. You fall asleep to frogs and wake to the keeper’s wife at the stove, and for a night or two the rhythm of the grove is the only schedule you keep.
