Courtyards Inside the Eight Trigrams: Staying in Zhuge Village

钟池半月照八卦,古巷深处有客眠 Zhōngchí bàn yuè zhào bāguà, gǔ xiàng shēn chù yǒu kè mián – A half moon over Bell Pond lights the eight trigrams; deep in the old lanes, a guest is sleeping

诸葛村住宿 Zhūgě Cūn Zhùsù the stays inside 诸葛八卦村 Zhūgě Bāguà Cūn Zhuge Bagua Village are the village itself – courtyard guesthouses converted from Ming-and-Qing merchant homes, their lattice doors opening onto the same flagstone lanes the village’s 4,000 descendants of Zhuge Liang walk nightly. There are no chain hotels here and no need: two dozen-odd family conversions cluster inside the preserved core, around 钟池 Zhōngchí the Bell Pond and the upper lane, and the night gates close behind the day-trippers the way they have for centuries.

The conversions keep the bones – carved beams, skywells where rain falls into stone cisterns – and add the modern minimum: en-suite baths, floor heating for the damp winter, breakfast of Lanxi dumplings and vinegar noodles on a courtyard table. Rooms facing the pond wake to mist; rooms on the upper lane trade the view for total quiet after nine.

Staying overnight is the only way to see the village work: the herbal-medicine shops shutting their cabinets at dusk, elders playing xiangqi under the ancestral hall eaves, and the eight radial lanes emptying until only the lanterns and the pond reflection move. Morning belongs to the residents – shopping baskets, school runs, and the smell of wood smoke from the kitchen courtyards.

Beyond the village beds, the same 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City keeps other bases for the around-the-region days: 市区住宿 Shìqū Zhùsù the river towers of downtown Jinhua, 横店住宿 Héngdiàn Zhùsù the studio-side hotels of Hengdian, 武义温泉住宿 Wǔyì Wēnquán Zhùsù the spring resorts of Wuyi, or 永康住宿 Yǒngkāng Zhùsù the business hotels of Yongkang – four more doors into the same 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City. With beds settled, our Jinhua travel map fills the days.

The Stays

  • The splurge tier is the restored-mansion guesthouses near the丞相祠堂: two-courtyard suites, carved-bed rooms, private tea service in the skywell – the stay that buys you the village after dark.
  • The character tier is the family conversions on the upper lanes: grandmother-cooked breakfasts, rooms above the herb shops, windows opening on grey-tile rooftops – the warm central pick.
  • The value tier is the pond-facing rooms in simpler houses: basic baths, thick quilts, the Bell Pond sunrise for a courtyard rate – the one-night village door.

flowcloud would say a Zhuge Village night is the eight trigrams at rest: lanterns down the radial lanes, the pond holding half a moon and all of the rooftops, and a courtyard bed that has heard the same quiet for six hundred years. All checked November 2026.

Where to stay: The village keeps its beds inside the maze – restored-mansion guesthouses own the skywell tea service, upper-lane conversions own the courtyard breakfasts, pond-facing rooms own the sunrise over the outer hills. All checked November 2026.
