A Green Ocean with a Viewing Tower: The Anji Bamboo Sea

五岳归来不看山,竹海归来不看林 Wǔyuè guīlái bù kàn shān, zhúhǎi guīlái bù kàn lín – After the Five Peaks no mountain appeals; after the Bamboo Sea no forest does

安吉竹海 Ānjí Zhúhǎi the Anji Bamboo Sea, south of 安吉县 Ānjí Xiàn Anji county town, is exactly what the name promises – an ocean of moso bamboo running ridge after ridge to the haze, so extensive that the county keeps a tower in its middle just so visitors can watch it move. Ang Lee filmed the treetop duel of 《卧虎藏龙》 Wòhǔ Cánglóng Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon here, and the site’s own name – 中国大竹海 Zhōngguó Dà Zhúhǎi the Great Bamboo Sea of China – claims the crown without embarrassment: this is the largest single bamboo landscape in the country’s postcard memory.

The 观竹楼 Guānzhú Lóu bamboo-viewing tower is the payoff: climb its stairs and the forest turns to a green sea in every direction – waves of crowns, light moving across the leaves, the wind writing on all of it at once. Photographers go up for the panorama; everyone else goes up twice.

Down in the groves the scale changes and the bamboo becomes architecture: culms three hands thick rising ten stories, trail tunnels where the light goes green, and the small water features – 五女泉 Wǔnǚ Quán the Five Maidens’ Spring among them – that give the gorge its name-lore. The groves are working forest too: Anji’s bamboo economy runs from these slopes into chopsticks, flooring, paper and the county’s famous bamboo weaving, and in season you meet the cutters’ handcarts on the trails.

A half day covers the circuit – gate, grove trails, tower, the spring – and the county builds a full day around it: bamboo museums and the bamboo博览园 bólǎnyuán exhibition park near town, tea valleys west of the city, and the bamboo banquet for lunch. Few counties in China are this literally grown out of one plant; the Bamboo Sea is the county’s root system.

Practicalities

  • The scenic gate takes a park ticket; the tower climb is on foot and the circuit takes about two to three hours at easy pace.
  • Wear grip shoes – grove trails stay damp, and stone steps in the shade dry slowly.
  • Spring brings the shoot-digging season and the county’s freshest bamboo dishes; summer is the coolest escape this close to Shanghai.
  • Park buses and taxis run from Anji county town; the high-speed station is twenty-five minutes from the gate.

Words and Names

安吉竹海 Ānjí Zhúhǎi the Anji Bamboo Sea; 毛竹 máozhú moso bamboo, the forest’s species; 观竹楼 Guānzhú Lóu the bamboo-viewing tower; 五女泉 Wǔnǚ Quán the Five Maidens’ Spring; 卧虎藏龙 Wòhǔ Cánglóng Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the film shot in these groves. Beyond the green ocean, the same 湖州市 Húzhōu Shì Huzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 南浔古镇 Nánxún Gǔzhèn the silk canal town, 莫干山 Mògān Shān the villa mountain, 下渚湖湿地 Xiàzhǔ Hú Shīdì the ibis wetland, or 南太湖度假区 Nán Tàihú Dùjiàqū the Moon Hotel lakeshore – four more doors into the same 湖州市 Húzhōu Shì Huzhou City. Once the bamboo has had its wind, our Huzhou food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say the Bamboo Sea is a forest that behaves like water: it has tides of light, a horizon, a tower for the lighthouse keeper – and every wind that crosses it proves the county’s whole economy is just the sea, harvested. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: The Bamboo Sea sits south of Anji town – Anji high-speed station is twenty-five minutes by taxi, park buses run in season, and the tower circuit takes a relaxed half day. All checked November 2026.
