The Forest That Pumps: Baili Oil Region, Karamay
磕头机列百里阵,戈壁深处尽油花 Kētóujī liè bǎilǐ zhèn, gēbì shēnchù jìn yóuhuā – Pumpjacks line up in a hundred-li formation; deep in the gobi, oil blossoms everywhere
正文:百里油区 Bǎilǐ Yóuqū the Baili Oil Region is the working landscape west of 克拉玛依市 Kèlāmǎyī Shì Karamay City – a hundred-li band of gobi where the pumpjacks stand so thick and regular that drivers call it a forest, the nodding steel heads of the “kowtow machines” (as the Chinese pun on 磕头机 Kētóujī goes) bowing at the horizon in every direction. This is the field that made the city: wells first tapped in the 1950s, still producing under gathering stations, pipelines and the flat horizon of the Junggar Basin’s western rim. A purpose-built viewing platform – its ground lettering a landmark in its own right – lets visitors stand inside the working field, and the drives between Karamay and the northern towns thread directly through the machinery of a seventy-year oil economy.

The viewing platform is the place to read the scale: from its deck the pumpjacks repeat to the horizon like a printed pattern, access roads ruling the gobi into a grid, flare stacks and tank farms marking the field’s heart. Interpretive boards explain the nodding-cycle – down to sip, up to swallow – and why the rhythm never quite stops, even at night.
Up close the forest turns sculpture. Painted pumpjacks – some in the red-and-gold commemorative livery the field reserves for display wells – stand beside rusted veterans; workers in red coveralls move between wellheads in pickup trucks; and the gobi itself, gravel and short-winged saltbush, keeps everything at a horizon scale that photographs love. Sunset is the field’s golden hour: the heads become silhouettes against a sky that has nothing to block it.
The oil region asks for a car and an hour’s wandering: the platform stop, then any of the service roads where the wellheads crowd closer, then the drive back into the city past the original 1955 memorial sites. It pairs perfectly with 黑油山 Hēiyóu Shān Black Oil Mountain in a single “from seep to forest” oil day – the hill where the oil shows itself, and the field where the city harvests it.

Practicalities
Beyond the oil forest, the same 克拉玛依市 Kèlāmǎyī Shì Karamay City keeps more places worth the detour: 黑油山 Hēiyóu Shān Black Oil Mountain the founding seep, 乌尔禾世界魔鬼城 Wū’ěrhé Shìjiè Móguǐ Chéng Urho Ghost City the yardang badlands, 独山子大峡谷 Dúshānzǐ Dàxiágǔ Dushanzi Grand Canyon the southern gorge, or 克拉玛依河 Kèlāmǎyī Hé the river greenbelt downtown – four more doors into the same 克拉玛依市 Kèlāmǎyī Shì Karamay City. Once the field is toured, our Karamay food map fills the table.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say the Baili Oil Region is a gobi turned clockwork: a hundred li of nodding steel, a horizon with no empty space, and the steady heartbeat that pays for every fountain in town. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: The derrick country starts just north of Baijiantan district, under an hour from the city centre – no ticket, drive the oil roads at will, and the golden hour puts the pump-jacks in silhouette for the whole northern sky; mind the working sites. All checked November 2026.
