Baofeng Lake: A Still Mirror Among the Peaks

Not far from the towering sandstone pillars of 张家界 Zhāngjiājiè, there is a lake so still that it looks as though the mountains have been doubled. 宝峰湖 Bǎofēng Hú (Baofeng Lake) sits in a narrow valley in 湖南 Húnán, wrapped by sheer forested cliffs, and its water reflects the peaks so perfectly that the boundary between rock and reflection blurs.

A still karst lake reflecting forested peaks in Hunan

Baofeng Lake is fed by springs in the surrounding hills, and it is what geologists call a solution lake — a body of water that has filled a hollow worn into the limestone. The result is a long, narrow stretch of emerald water ringed by jagged green mountains, and it is one of the most peaceful corners of the Zhangjiajie region.

Taking the boat

The best way to see the lake is by boat. A small boat carries you slowly along the water, past cliff faces covered in vegetation, while the pilot points out the shapes the rocks are said to resemble. The water is so clear and still that you can see the reflection of the forest right down to the smallest branch.

Because the lake is sheltered by the surrounding peaks, it is often calm even when the wind blows higher up. This makes it a favourite spot for photography, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the mist hangs low over the water.

Around the lake

There are paths along parts of the shoreline where you can walk, although the boat ride is the main event. The area is part of the larger Zhangjiajie landscape, so you can easily combine Baofeng Lake with a trip to the nearby peaks. There is a waterfall at one end of the lake that tumbles down the cliff, adding to the sense that you have wandered into a painting.

Practicalities

Baofeng Lake is in the 武陵源 Wǔlíngyuán area of 湖南 Húnán, not far from the main 张家界 Zhāngjiājiè scenic area. The entrance ticket includes the boat ride, and the tour takes around an hour. The area is open year-round; be aware that it can be crowded at peak holiday times. Getting there is straightforward as part of any Zhangjiajie itinerary.

Getting there: 宝峰湖 Bǎofēng Hú is in the 武陵源 Wǔlíngyuán district, near 张家界 Zhāngjiājiè in 湖南 Húnán. It is easiest to reach as part of a visit to the Zhangjiajie area, by bus or car from the town. The ticket includes the boat ride across the lake, which takes roughly an hour; the lake is open year-round but is busiest during the Chinese holidays. Go early or late in the day for the calmest water and the best light. Flowcloud would say that Baofeng Lake is the quiet answer to the loud mountains — the place you go when the peaks have left you speechless and you need a moment of still. Take the boat, and let the reflection finish the mountains.
