Bisezhai Railway Station: A French-Era Metre-Gauge Stop on the Yunnan-Vietnam Line

米轨一条通越南,碧色百年卧斜阳。Mǐguǐ yī tiáo tōng Yuènán, Bìsè bǎi nián wò xiéyáng – One metre-gauge line runs to Vietnam; Bisezhai’s century lies in the slanting sun.

碧色寨 Bìsèzhài Bisezhai is not a fortress or a French quarter — it is, to be plain, a 火车站 huǒchēzhàn railway station in a village of the same name, about ten kilometres north of 蒙自 Méngzì Mengzi, seat of 红河哈尼族彝族自治州 Hónghé Hānízú Yízú Zìzhìzhōu Honghe, on the 滇越铁路 Diān-Yuè Tiělù Yunnan-Vietnam Railway — the 米轨 mǐguǐ metre-gauge line the French built from 海防 Hǎifáng Haiphong through 河口 Hékǒu Hekou to 昆明 Kūnmíng in the first decade of the twentieth century. The station is the postcard: a 黄色站房 huángsè zhànfáng yellow station house, a 红瓦 hóngwǎ red-tile 候车室 hòuchēshì waiting room, a platform and a village of old walls behind, the whole ensemble carrying a 博物馆 bówùguǎn museum quality — a piece of colonial-era engineering marooned in the hills. What you are actually visiting is a stop on a historic railway that became a film set: 冯小刚 Féng Xiǎogāng Feng Xiaogang’s 《芳华》 Fānghuá Youth (2017) was shot here, and the village has been dressed for the camera ever since.

The honest grade is “a photogenic railway relic within easy reach of Mengzi,” and the proximity is the recommendation. 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài is small — a station, a lane of old houses and a 法式 Fǎshì French-flavoured waiting room you can walk through in twenty minutes — so it is a half-day outing rather than a destination, and the honest warning is not to expect a full museum: the railway atmosphere is real, the interpretation is light (worth confirming whether the station buildings are open for interior visits, since access has varied). The bigger question is the train: 米轨 mǐguǐ sightseeing services have run between 蒙自 Méngzì and 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài at times, and their operation has been on and off (worth confirming the current status of the metre-gauge sightseeing train before counting on arriving by rail). By road it is easy — a taxi or local-bus run of about ten kilometres from the 蒙自 Méngzì city area — and most visitors pair it with a morning in the city.

The wry truth is that Bisezhai is sold as the era of Youth, and the film dressing has aged faster than the railway. What is overrated is the expectation of a preserved French town: 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài is a small village with one photogenic station and a few 老宅 lǎozhái old houses, and after the 《芳华》 Fānghuá boom it took on a faint theme-park tint — a couple of cafés, some props, more souvenir stalls than trains. What is genuinely worth it is the railway itself: the 米轨 mǐguǐ tracks, the 黄色站房 huángsè zhànfáng yellow station house and the 红瓦 hóngwǎ waiting room are genuine 滇越铁路 Diān-Yuè Tiělù relics, and standing on the 站台 zhàntái with the hills around you, the colonial-century romance does the work of any exhibition. Best season is the dry months, roughly November to April, when the light on the red tiles is clean and the 滇南 Diānnán sun is mild; summer is the rainy season and the green grows over everything. Go in the morning light, walk the tracks, and give it ninety honest minutes, because 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài rewards the person who came for the railway and quietly underwhelms the one who came for the film.

The self-deprecating footnote: I came for the 滇越铁路 Diān-Yuè Tiělù romance, found a café selling 《芳华》 Fānghuá postcards and a station house that has plainly been repainted for the movies — and then a 米轨 mǐguǐ work train rattled through the valley and the century reassembled itself for a minute. 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài rewards the person who came for the railway and quietly underwhelms the one who came for the film. Go for the yellow walls, the red tiles and the tracks; let the movie be the excuse.

Practicalities

  • Rating: A French-era metre-gauge station and village about ten kilometres north of Mengzi city on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway; a yellow station house, red-tile waiting room and film-dressed lanes — a half-day railway relic, not a museum town.
  • Tickets: The village and lanes are open; any station interior or exhibition access, and the 米轨 mǐguǐ sightseeing train from 蒙自 Méngzì, are separate (worth confirming the current charges, opening access and whether the metre-gauge sightseeing service is running at all — its operation has been on and off).
  • Address: 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài, about 10 km north of 蒙自 Méngzì Mengzi city, 红河哈尼族彝族自治州 Hónghé Hānízú Yízú Zìzhìzhōu Honghe — reachable by taxi or local bus from the city, on the old 滇越铁路 Diān-Yuè Tiělù line (worth confirming the sightseeing-train status before planning a rail arrival).
  • Time needed: Ninety minutes to two hours at the station and lanes; a half day with the ride out from 蒙自 Méngzì and a slow lunch — do not budget an overnight unless the railway itself is the point.

flowcloud would say that 碧色寨 Bìsèzhài is Mengzi’s 滇越铁路 Diān-Yuè Tiělù relic — a 米轨 mǐguǐ station with a 黄色站房 huángsè zhànfáng yellow station house and 红瓦 hóngwǎ waiting room, dressed for 《芳华》 Fānghuá Youth — and that the honest move is ninety morning minutes for the railway, because the metre-gauge sightseeing train’s status needs verifying, the village has taken on a film tint, and the place rewards the person who came for the railway century while quietly underwhelming the one who came for the movie. Getting there: Bisezhai village north of Mengzi, the prefecture seat, about half an hour by road (worth confirming current access arrangements, since the site has been redeveloped for visitors); the station plaza and the rails are free to wander, and morning light suits the yellow buildings best.
