沧源崖画 Cāngyuán Yáhuà the cliff paintings of 沧源 Cāngyuán Cangyuan are dotted across 勐省镇 Měngshěng Zhèn, 勐来乡 Měnglái Xiāng and 糯良乡 Nuòliáng Xiāng in the mountains of 沧源佤族自治县 Cāngyuán Wǎzú Zìzhìxiàn, along the gorges of the 小黑江 Xiǎohēi Jiāng Xiaohei River and its tributaries, in a zone roughly 25 km east-west by 15 km north-south at 1,000 to 2,000 m worth confirming. Sources count a dozen-odd painted points – 11, 15 and 17 all appear worth confirming – totalling some 480 to 540 m² of cliff face carrying 1,100-plus recognisable figures worth confirming, brushed in red 赤铁矿 chìtiěkuàng ochre onto inward-leaning limestone walls. High-precision 铀系测年 yóuxì cènián uranium-series dating puts the painting between roughly 3,800 and 2,700 years ago worth confirming – late 新石器时代 Xīnshíqì Shídài Neolithic, and among the oldest cliff paintings yet found anywhere in China worth confirming.
