Huang'anba Grassland: the High Pasture Under the Cloud Sea

Cǎo zhǎn qiān mǔ, fēng guò yǒng làng; yún shēng jiǎo luò, xīng luò zhěn biān. — Grass unfurls a thousand mu, the wind in long waves; clouds born at the mountain’s foot, stars falling at the pillow’s edge.

Huang’anba Grassland (黄安坝草原, Huáng’ānbà Cǎoyuán) is the high plateau pasture on the county’s southern flank — one of the highest mountain grasslands in Chongqing, unrated and free, where the Daba range flattens into open grass before dropping away again. The product is altitude experience: cloud seas below the campsite, horse riding and kite-flying on the open slope, and star-sky tents (星空帐篷) for the night. In a municipality of gorges, Huang’anba is the horizontal Chongqing — the one place where the horizon line runs straight.

The grassland works as a single field with three layers. By day it is wind and grass and the cloud sea, which forms in the valley below and, on a good morning, sits under the pasture like a second, slower ocean. Horses are the local transport for the slope; kites are the local amusement, because the wind that troubles the tent at night is exactly the wind the kite wants. By evening the sky does the rest — with so little light pollution, the Milky Way is a naked-eye object rather than a photograph.

The pasture is cold in every month that has an r in it, and the wind does not stop at sunset — bring a real jacket, not a summer layer, and stake the tent properly. The riding and kiting are informal trades run by local households; prices are negotiated on the spot. The road up is long and slow; combine Huang’anba with Feidu Gorge downstream on the same day, which is the local pattern.

flowcloud would say that a mountain municipality keeps one flat place, and keeps it high — and that Huang’anba’s whole trade is letting you stand where the horizon is still allowed to exist.

Practicalities

  • Rating: unrated; free access
  • Address: the southern high plateau of the county, connected by mountain road to Feidu Gorge
  • Getting there: mountain road from the county seat or the Dong’an direction; allow a half-day for the drive alone ⚠️ (checked October 2026, subject to change)
  • Time needed: a full day; overnight on the pasture is the point
