The 1905 Steam Engine and the Steel Works It Served

重庆工业博物馆 Chóngqìng Gōngyè Bówùguǎn, the Chongqing Industrial Museum, at 义渡路 999 Yìdù Lù 999, Yidu Road 999, is built on the former 重钢型钢厂 Zhònggāng Xíngāng Chǎng Chongqing Iron and Steel型钢 works site and graded AAAA in February 2023. Its treasure is an 8,000-horsepower twin-cylinder steam engine made in Sheffield in 1905, shipped west in 1938 and used in 1952 to roll the first rail of New China – the 中华 Zhōnghuá 38-kilo rail of the 成渝铁路 Chéngyú Tiělù Chengyu railway. The park is free, 9:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays except on public holidays, telephone 023-61843550, and the “Steel Soul” (钢魂 Gāng Hún) hall sits on the 1938 钢迁会 Gāngqiānhuì workshop, a seventh-batch national key relic. The museum hall itself is ungraded; the AAAA is the park’s.

A vast industrial-heritage hall with a long low 1905 steam engine on a concrete plinth, a brass nameplate and a row of massive flywheels, high windows letting in flat light, bare steel truss roof, no people and no readable text or labels on the machine

What makes the engine the treasure is a single biography. The 8,000-horsepower twin-cylinder horizontal steam engine was built by a Sheffield works in 1905, weighed 250 tonnes and measured about 10 metres long and 2 metres high, and in 1938 it was moved west ahead of the war, eventually reaching the 重钢 Chongqing Iron and Steel works at Dadukou. In 1952 it rolled the first rail of New China – the 中华式 38-kilogram rail that laid the 成渝铁路 Chengyu railway, the first railway of the new state – and that single fact is why the machine sits under a hall of its own rather than in a corner. The park was built on the former 型钢厂型钢 works site after the steel company’s 2011 environmental relocation, and the engine is the load-bearing exhibit of the whole 博览园 Bólǎnyuàn exhibition park.

The grade is the part a visitor must understand before quoting it, and the split is stated plainly rather than hidden. The AAAA grading of 13 February 2023 applies to the 重庆工业文化博览园 Chóngqìng Gōngyè Wénhuà Bólǎnyuàn Chongqing Industrial Culture Park – the park – while the museum hall itself is ungraded, a fact the corporate annual report carries in its “quality grade” field as 未定级 wèi dìngjí, not graded. The honest sentence is that you visit an AAAA park that contains an ungraded museum, and the engine does not care which line the grade falls on. The park opened to the public on 28 September 2019, the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic, while the corporate establishment date of 2016-09-28 is the company’s, not the public opening’s, and both are given so neither is mistaken for the other.

The preserved 1938 steel-works workshop of the Steel Soul hall, a long brick-and-steel bay with overhead crane rails and a row of dark machinery, a high clerestory lighting the floor, no people and no readable text or labels on the structures

The relics around the engine are the second reason to come, and they are national rather than municipal. The 钢魂 Steel Soul hall sits on the 1938 钢铁厂迁建委员会生产车间旧址 Gāngtiěchǎng Qiānjiàn Wěiyuánhuì Shēngchǎn Chējiān Jiùzhǐ, the former production-workshop site of the Steel Works Relocation Committee, listed as a seventh-batch national key cultural relic in 2013, and the broader site was admitted to the first batch of national industrial heritage in 2017. The park is composed of a main “百年风华” (Century Glory) exhibition hall, the Steel Soul themed hall, and an industrial-heritage park of preserved workshops and machinery, which is the reason a visit is a half-day rather than a photo stop. The museum’s own telephone, 023-61843550, is the number to confirm the hours, because the closed-Monday rule is the one that decides the itinerary.

What the record does not give is a ticket, and that absence is the district’s choice rather than a gap. The park is free, so the only charge a visitor might meet is for a special exhibition inside the halls, and none is published for the standing collection, so the practical answer is to arrive on a non-Monday and pay nothing. The 义渡路 999 address is the one to give a driver, and the walk from the gate to the engine is the reason a Sunday night at a nearby hotel is the move the stay column recommends.

Practicalities

Tickets: Free, and that is the published arrangement rather than an assumption: the 重庆工业文化博览园 Chongqing Industrial Culture Park charges no general admission, and no source attaches a ticket to the main “百年风华” hall, the 钢魂 Steel Soul hall or the industrial-heritage park. The useful caveat is the grade split – the AAAA of 13 February 2023 belongs to the park, while the museum hall itself is ungraded (the corporate annual report’s “quality grade” field reads 未定级, not graded) – but the free entry is the park’s and the hall’s alike. A special exhibition inside the halls might charge, but none is published for the standing collection, so the practical answer is to arrive on a non-Monday and pay nothing; the museum’s own number is 023-61843550.

Opening hours: 9:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, and this is the one window the museum publishes, with last entry implied by the 17:00 close. The open day is every day but Monday, which is the rhythm that decides a visit, and the public opening of 28 September 2019 – the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic – is the date the district uses, while the corporate establishment of 2016-09-28 is the company’s and is given only to stop the two being confused. Plan the engine for a morning, because the hall is a half-day and the light through the high windows is best before the coaches.

Closing day: Mondays, except on public holidays, and this is the single weekly closing day the district publishes for the museum, stated plainly so a visitor does not arrive to a shut gate. The corollary is practical: a Monday costs you the engine and the Steel Soul workshop, and the ancient town up the road stays open, which is the useful split for a wet Monday in Dadukou. No other closing rhythm is published for the park, and the free entry means the only cost of getting the day wrong is a wasted trip rather than a lost ticket.

Getting there: The museum is at 义渡路 999 Yìdù Lù 999, Yidu Road 999, on the former 重钢型钢厂 Chongqing Iron and Steel型钢 works site in 大渡口区 Dadukou District; give a driver the number rather than just “the steel works”, because the site is now a park and the name alone sends people to a closed gate. The sources publish the address and the telephone 023-61843550 rather than a route, and no rail station is named for the museum, so treat it as a road destination off the district core with the last leg a short taxi or bus (checked October 2026, subject to change).

A wide plaza in front of the museum at dusk, the low industrial-heritage hall block lit along its roofline, a preserved crane and a rail truck on display outside, a few visitors reduced to silhouettes, no readable text or signage on the structures

flowcloud would say that the Chongqing Industrial Museum is the one place in this district where the treasure is a 250-tonne 1905 Sheffield steam engine that rolled New China’s first rail in 1952, and that the honest grade to quote is AAAA for the park and ungraded for the hall – because the engine does not care which line the grade falls on, and the only rule that matters is arrive on a non-Monday with the telephone 023-61843550 confirmed.
