The first view from the top of 铜鼓岭 Tónggǔlǐng (Copper Drum Ridge) is the kind that makes you stop talking. Below you, a crescent of pale sand runs along the edge of a deep blue sea, and behind it stretch the green hills of 文昌 Wénchāng. This is the easternmost high point of Hainan, a bump of granite and green rising straight out of the coast, and from its summit the whole of the island’s wild east coast spreads out beneath you.

The name has a good story. Legend has it that when 伏波将军 Fúbō Jiāngjūn (General Fu Bo) was camped here two millennia ago during the Han campaigns in the south, he beat a copper drum to call his soldiers together, and some say the mountain still hums with the memory of it. Whatever the truth, the name has stuck, and the ridge has become the lookout point for this stretch of the island.
A mountain at the edge of the sea
Copper Drum Ridge is not a towering peak — it rises to a few hundred metres — but what it lacks in height it makes up for in position. It stands right at the eastern tip of the island, so the sea seems to wrap around it, and on a clear day the view takes in 月亮湾 Yuèliàngwān (Moon Bay) carving below, the fishing boats out in the strait, and, far to the distance, more coastline fading into haze.
Around the summit, the mountain is covered in dense tropical forest and scattered with huge boulders, and there is a short loop trail that takes you from the car park up to the main viewpoint. The walk is gentle, shaded by the trees, and quick — the payoff is out of all proportion to the effort.
On a bright day the whole coast lays itself out at once: pale sand running for kilometres toward the horizon, the shallow water shading from jade to deep blue, and a scatter of fishing boats sitting out in the strait. It is the kind of view that rearranges your sense of the island — Hainan as a green edge against an enormous sea, rather than a resort map.

Beyond the lookout
Below the ridge lies 月亮湾 Yuèliàngwān (Moon Bay), a long, quiet beach that is one of the least developed on this side of Hainan. The sand is fine and pale and the water is clear, and because the resort development here is still thin, you can often have a long stretch of it almost to yourself.
A short drive away is the town of 龙楼 Lónglóu at the foot of the mountain, which is the nearest base for food and a place to soak in the local rhythm. This is also the part of Hainan associated with the country’s space programme — the 文昌 Wénchāng space launch site is not far, and the whole area has a slightly newer, more functional feel than the tourist resorts further west.
Practicalities
Copper Drum Ridge is on the eastern coast of 文昌 Wénchāng, which sits on the still-developing side of Hainan, away from the crowds of 三亚 Sānyà. It is reachable by road from the city in under an hour, and you can visit the summit and 月亮湾 Yuèliàngwān below in a single afternoon. The entrance fee is modest and the summit loop is not strenuous, though the mountain can be windy at the top.
Getting there: 铜鼓岭 Tónggǔlǐng is in 文昌 Wénchāng on the eastern coast of Hainan, about an hour’s drive from the city and well under two hours from 海口 Hǎikǒu. It is accessible by car or taxi from 龙楼 Lónglóu town at its base. Come on a clear day for the sea view, carry water, and give yourself a couple of hours for the summit and the beach below. Flowcloud would say that this is the kind of viewpoint that reminds you why Hainan is more than a resort island — it is a real place with real stories in its hills. Climb the ridge, and let the east coast do the talking.
