The White Season: Cotton Country Around Tiemenguan
白絮千重接远山,机声一夜雪满田 Bái xù qiānchóng jiē yuǎnshān, jīshēng yīyè xuě mǎn tián – A thousand folds of white lint reach the far mountains; after one night of machine noise, the fields are snowy with cotton
正文:棉田 Mián Tián the cotton fields around 铁门关市 Tiěménguān Shì Tiemenguan City are the regiment farm belt at its most monumental – flat irrigation country running to the horizon in rows, green through summer and then white from late September, when the bolls split and the whole district turns into the largest machine-harvested cotton field most visitors will ever stand beside. This is the Second Division’s breadwinner crop, and the scale is the spectacle: fields measured in kilometers, not plots.

The harvest is machine theater. Cotton pickers in red and green crawl the rows shedding round modules – giant wrapped bales of lint dropped across the field like a giant’s sewing set – while module trucks queue on the headlands and the gins light up for the season. From the G3012 service roads you can watch whole fields go from white to stubble in an afternoon, and the crews welcome watchers who keep to the edges.
The season’s calendar explains the town. Through October the regiment towns fill with picking crews, machinery dealers and truckers; the diners open early, the fuel stops run all night, and the cotton price is the only topic at every counter. Visitors who come for the orchards often stay an extra day just to watch the pickers work – the white season is Xinjiang’s harvest spectacle at its most mechanical and most enormous.
Between harvests the fields have their own quiet. Winter stubble under frost, spring planting rigs laying the plastic mulch rows that make the desert bloom, summer irrigation water running the furrows – the cotton country is working landscape the whole year, and the straight regiment roads that thread it are the best driving in the oasis, shaded by poplar windbreaks planted exactly where the plans of fifty years ago said they should go.

Practicalities
Beyond the fields, the same 铁门关市 Tiěménguān Shì Tiemenguan City keeps more places worth the detour: 孔雀河风景带 Kǒngquè Hé Fēngjǐngdài the Kongque River Belt for the evening promenade, 香梨园 Xiānglí Yuán the fragrant-pear orchards for the September fruit, 铁门关城市公园 Tiěménguān Chéngshì Gōngyuán the city parks for the pagoda walks, or 铁门关新城 Tiěménguān Xīnchéng the new city for the planned-grid streets – four more doors into the same 铁门关市 Tiěménguān Shì Tiemenguan City. Once the fields are walked, our Tiemenguan food map fills the day.
