宝顶山 Bǎodǐng Shān Baoding Mountain holds the crown of the 大足石刻 Dàzú Shíkè Dazu Rock Carvings, the UNESCO World Heritage cliff-sculpture complex carved across the late Tang and Song dynasties on the lower slopes of a wooded ridge in 大足区 Dàzú Qū Dazu District, Chongqing. Unlike the scattered cave shrines elsewhere in the district, Baoding was conceived as a single devotional walk: a long open-air cliff face where carved tableaux unfold in sequence, so a visitor moves through stories rather than between disconnected grottoes. The rock here is soft reddish sandstone, weathered but still readable in its forms, and the whole mountainside was laid out by the monk 赵智凤 Zhào Zhìfēng Zhao Zhifeng over decades of work that treated sculpture as preaching for people who could not read scripture.

The centrepiece is the 卧佛 Wòfó Reclining Buddha, a figure about 31 metres long laid out along the cliff in serene repose, the largest carving at the site and one of the great reclining Buddhas of China. Nearby stands the 千手观音 Qiānshǒu Guānyīn Thousand-Hand Guanyin, a towering bodhisattva whose many arms radiate across the rock in a dense, restored gilded fan, each hand once carrying an eye or a small implement, a spectacle of devotion and craft. Between them run the narrative panels — the 父母恩重经 Fùmǔ Ēnzhòng Jīng Parents’-Kindness Sutra tableaux of family life, the 地狱变相 Dìyù Biànxiàng hell scenes, and the 牧牛图 Mùniú Tú Herding-the-Ox sequence — carved so plainly that meaning reads at a glance, which was the whole point of the place.

What makes Baoding different from a museum is the walk itself. The carvings are set at eye level along a path that climbs gently and turns, so the sequence controls your pace and your sightlines, and the mountain’s quiet does the rest. The restoration of the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, completed after years of careful work, returned much of its former brightness, while the Reclining Buddha is left more weathered, which keeps the contrast between a living shrine and an old one honest. Visitors who come for one statue usually stay for the whole mountainside, because the site was built to be taken in as one continuous act of looking rather than as a list of highlights.

The site rewards a slow footing. Walk the cliff in the intended order rather than backtracking for photos, give the narrative panels the same attention as the famous statues, and notice how the carvers used the natural slope to stage each scene. The sandstone takes light and shadow well, so the forms read strongest when the sun is not flat overhead.
Words and Names
大足石刻 Dàzú Shíkè is the Dazu Rock Carvings, the UNESCO World Heritage cliff sculpture of 大足区 Dàzú Qū Dazu District, Chongqing, inscribed in 1999. 宝顶山 Bǎodǐng Shān is Baoding Mountain, the crowning complex of the site and the subject of this article. 卧佛 Wòfó is the Reclining Buddha, a figure about 31 metres long cut into the cliff at Baoding. 千手观音 Qiānshǒu Guānyīn is the Thousand-Hand Guanyin, the gilded many-armed bodhisattva relief at the heart of the walk. 赵智凤 Zhào Zhìfēng is Zhao Zhifeng, the monk who organised the carving of Baoding Mountain over decades of Song-dynasty work.
What the Locals Know
Baoding is the busiest of the Dazu sites, so the light and the crowds both matter: local visitors say the cliff reads best in the softer hours after morning opening or toward late afternoon, when the sun is low on the carved faces and tour groups have thinned. The site is reached from central Dazu by a shuttle or public road rather than on foot, and the walk along the cliff is mostly flat and shaded but long, so comfortable shoes and water are the honest preparation. No specific ticket price, opening hour, vendor name or guided-tour operator is stated here; treat those as things to confirm at the gate on the day. One honest caveat: the Thousand-Hand Guanyin has been heavily restored and is bright gilt, while the Reclining Buddha is left weathered, so expect contrast rather than uniform old stone.
flowcloud would say that Baoding Mountain is the crown of the Dazu Rock Carvings, a single devotional cliff walk of late-Tang and Song sculpture in Dazu District crowned by the about-31-metre Reclining Buddha and the gilded Thousand-Hand Guanyin, laid out by the monk Zhao Zhifeng so the mountain itself preaches to those who cannot read scripture. Where to find it: the Baoding Mountain complex is the main cluster of the 大足石刻 Dàzú Shíkè Dazu Rock Carvings in 大足区 Dàzú Qū Dazu District, Chongqing Municipality, reached by shuttle or road from the district town alongside the Beishan and other carving sites; the 卧佛 Wòfó Reclining Buddha and 千手观音 Qiānshǒu Guānyīn Thousand-Hand Guanyin are both on the one cliff walk. No specific address, ticket price or operator is invented here; the carvings are a district-wide heritage site rather than the property of one named gate. All checked October 2026.
