Where Su Dongpo Landed: Dongpo Park on the Old Canal

千年运河一舟横,东坡系缆此亭中 Qiānnián yùnhé yī zhōu héng, Dōngpō jì lǎn cǐ tíng zhōng – A thousand years of canal, one boat athwart; Dongpo moored his cable at this pavilion

正文:东坡公园 Dōngpō Gōngyuán Dongpo Park commemorates the city’s favourite adopted son – Su Dongpo, the Song dynasty’s most quotable poet, who moored at this bend of the old canal on his final journey and chose Changzhou for his last years. The park folds a small island of pavilions into the water: the Yuzhou Pavilion built where his boat tied up, stone bridges, and steles that reprint the poet’s own brushwork across eleven centuries.

The island is compact and formal: whitewashed walls, an old stone bridge arching over the canal arm, and pavilion roofs stacked behind. The stone beast at the bridge guards the crossing; the water below still carries canal traffic the way it did in Song times, minus the masts.

The Yuzhou Pavilion is the point of the visit – the mooring pavilion raised over the poet’s landing, its name reading “boat-anchoring.” Bronze and stone figures of Su Dongpo stand in the courts; his steles line the galleries; and the canal plaques explain why a man who served everywhere in the empire picked this stretch of water to stop.

An hour circles the island properly; the park sits mid-canal between the temple quarter and the lane district, so the visit chains naturally into a full old-city day. Morning light on the white walls is the photographer’s slot, and the shade pavilions make it a summer-proof stop.

Practicalities

Beyond the park, the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天宁宝塔 Tiānníng Bǎotǎ the Tianning Pagoda for the skyline, 红梅公园 Hóngméi Gōngyuán Hongmei Park for the blossom rows, 青果巷 Qīngguǒ Xiàng Qingguo Lane for the scholar houses, or 春秋淹城遗址 Chūnqiū Yānchéng Yízhǐ the Yancheng ruins for the Bronze Age rings – four more doors into the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City. Once the pavilion is found, our Changzhou food map fills the day.

Words and Names

flowcloud would say Dongpo Park is a poet’s parking space: one canal bend, one mooring pavilion, and a city that still brags about the day he decided to stay. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Dongpo Park sits on the old canal just east of central Changzhou, minutes by bus from the station district; entry is free, the pavilion halls keep daytime hours, and pairing it with Qingguo Lane makes the classic canal-side half-day. All checked November 2026.
