The Biggest Lake in Zhejiang, Twenty Minutes from Town: Dongqian
三万顷波摇日影,一湖碧水枕宁波 Sān wàn qǐng bō yáo rì yǐng, yī hú bìshuǐ zhěn Níngbō – Thirty thousand qing of waves shake the sunlight; one lake of blue water pillows the city of Ningbo
东钱湖 Dōngqiánhú Dongqian Lake is the great blue lung east of 宁波市 Níngbō Shì Ningbo City – three times the area of Hangzhou’s West Lake, ringed by tea hills, causeway villages and the cycling greenways that made it the province’s weekend lake. The southern shore holds the resort belt and 小普陀 Xiǎo Pǔtuó Little Putuo, the water-temples peninsula; the east runs quiet through fishing inlets and 白石仙坪 Báishí Xiānpíng high meadows; and the lake’s own legend – the 越国 Yuèguó Yue kingdom’s minister 范蠡 Fàn Lǐ Fan Li retiring here with the beauty 西施 Xī Shī Xi Shi – still names half the bays.

The lake rewards wheels: the full greenway loop runs some thirty kilometers of lakeside path, bike-hire stands at every village, and the light changes completely between the misty morning west shore and the golden evening causeways. Boats and ferries link the southern piers to the temple islets in ten-minute hops.

The cultural layer hides in plain sight: 南宋石刻公园 Nán-Sòng Shíkè Gōngyuán the Southern Song stone-carving park holds one of China’s densest collections of period statuary, the 二灵山 Èrlíng Shān Erhuling temples keep their incense, and the tea terraces above the water pour the local yinzhou greens by the potful. On clear autumn days the lake mirrors the whole skyline of hills in water clear enough to count the sails.
Give it a day at minimum: the south-shore sights and temples first, the eastern greenway after lunch when the tour buses thin, and sunset from the long causeway that stitches the lake’s middle – the photograph every Ningbo phone gallery owns. Seafood towns on the north shore close the day with fish straight off the boats.
Practicalities
- Metro Line 4 plus a short bus ride reaches the south shore from downtown in about half an hour; the lake loop is best done by hired bike.
- The greenway is one-way traffic-managed on holiday weekends – walk it against the flow and you own the lake.
- Little Putuo and the stone-carving park sell separate tickets; the causeways and villages are free.
- Spring and late autumn are the lake’s best seasons; summer afternoons own the beaches.
