A Hundred Islands of Stone Houses and Sea Light: Dongtou

百岛棋布碧海间,渔灯夜夜照石厝 Bǎi dǎo qí bù bì hǎi jiān, yúdēng yèyè zhào shícuò – A hundred islands scattered like chessmen on the blue sea; fishing lamps light the stone houses night after night

洞头列岛 Dòngtóu Lièdǎo the Dongtou Islands scatter more than a hundred islets across the sea east of Wenzhou, now stitched to the mainland by a five-bridge causeway that makes the archipelago a day trip. The islands built their fame on fishing and on rock – 半屏山 Bànpíng Shān Half-Screen Mountain sheers a hundred meters straight into the sea along a knife ridge you can walk, and 望海楼 Wànghǎi Lóu the Sea-View Tower has watched the fleet come home since the Ming. Between the headlands, villages of dry-stone fishermen’s houses – 石厝 shícuò – stack their grey walls against the typhoon wind, and the light on the water does the rest.

The causeway drive itself is half the pleasure: five bridges hopping island to island, fishing harbors between, and the first proper sea light at the pass. 仙叠岩 Xiāndié Yán the Immortals’ Stacked Rocks piles granite boulders above a swimmable beach, and the coastal boardwalk north of it cuts along cliffs where the swell throws spray thirty feet.

The stone villages are the slow half. 花岗渔村 Huāgǎng Yúncūn Huagang fishing village keeps its lanes of dry-stone houses turned galleries and guesthouses; the shell-carving workshop in town shows the mother-of-pearl craft the islands shipped out for a century. Seafood is the default meal – the night market grills whatever the day boats landed, and the island’s seaweed noodles are the local breakfast.

Give Dongtou a day: Half-Screen Mountain in the morning light, the boardwalk after, stone village and night market to close. Campers should know the beaches run silk-smooth at dawn, and the sea-to-table restaurants post their morning catch on chalkboards by ten.

Practicalities

  • The five-bridge causeway connects Wenzhou’s outskirts to the main island in about 80 minutes by car; buses also run from the city’s coastal terminal.
  • Half-Screen Mountain, Immortals’ Stacked Rocks and the Sea-View Tower sell modest separate tickets; the cliff boardwalk is free.
  • The night seafood market on the harbor road peaks from six; point at the chalkboard, pay by the plate.
  • Autumn brings the clearest water and the festival calendar; typhoon season closes the beaches temporarily each summer.

Getting there: Dongtou lies 80 minutes from downtown Wenzhou by the five-bridge island causeway – direct buses leave the coastal terminal several times daily, and the airport drive runs about an hour. All checked November 2026.
