Dongxi Ancient Town

Dongxi Ancient Town, known as 东溪古镇 (Dōngxī Gǔzhèn), is a thousand-year-old wharf settlement in Chongqing’s Qijiang District, and it feels far more original than the polished lanes of Ciqikou (磁器口, Cíqikǒu). Built where old trade routes met the river, the town still keeps its Taiping Bridge (太平桥, Tàipíng Qiáo), a covered span over the water, and a sprawling 5,000-year banyan group (黄葛树, Huánggé Shù) whose roots drape over walls and steps. Walk the salt-horse ancient road (盐马古道, Yánmǎ Gǔdào) that once carried salt and horses inland, and step into the Wan Tian Gong guild hall (万天宫, Wàntiān Gōng) with its carved beams. Best of all, it is free to roam, and a newer cultural landmark called 綦彩·上河汇 (Qǐcǎi · Shànghéhuì) adds an evening music fountain and light show.

The town unfolds at walking pace, and the joy is in the details that no restoration crew has erased. The banyan group is the soul of Dongxi: massive old trees lean across the lanes, their roots gripping the old masonry, and locals sit in the shade playing cards or stringing laundry between branches. The salt-horse ancient road runs as a cobbled ribbon through the settlement, worn smooth by centuries of foot traffic and still used by residents on scooters and carts. Along it stand the guild halls and clan temples where merchants once met, their timber frames weathered but intact. Because the town is lived-in rather than staged, you hear real life — a radio from a doorway, a kettle on a stove, a dog asleep on a step — which is exactly what makes it feel authentic.

Evenings bring a second face to Dongxi. The 綦彩·上河汇 cultural block sits at the edge of the old core with a music fountain that plays after dark and a light show that washes the water and facades in colour. It is a modern layer laid gently beside the ancient town, and families come for the show before heading back into the lantern-lit lanes. During the day, though, the experience is slow and free: cross the Taiping Bridge, climb the guild-hall steps, buy a snack from a street stall, and watch the river move. Unlike the busier heritage towns near Chongqing, Dongxi asks nothing of you but time, and it repays a long, unhurried wander with the kind of ordinary beauty that staged sites cannot fake.

Dongxi works as a half-day by day and a gentle evening by night, especially if you combine the old lanes with the light show. It is free to enter, easy to reach, and refreshingly unpolished, which is the whole point.

What the Locals Know

Daytime is for the old lanes and the banyan shade; evening is for the 綦彩·上河汇 music fountain and light show, which usually runs after dark. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking, while summer evenings are pleasant once the heat drops.

Locals use the town as a relaxed outing rather than a sightseeing sprint. They cross the Taiping Bridge at golden hour, buy a snack from a stall, and let the kids chase the fountain lights. Weekdays are quieter; weekends draw more Chongqing day-trippers.

One honest caveat: the light show is a modern addition and not to everyone’s taste beside the ancient core, and some lanes are dim at night with uneven cobbles, so bring a small torch and mind your step.
