Dukezong Ancient Town: The Tibetan Quarter Under the Prayer Wheel

明月清风不用一钱买。Míngyuè qīngfēng bù yòng yī qián mǎi – Bright moon and fresh wind are bought for not a single coin.

独克宗古城 Dúkèzōng Gǔchéng Dukezong Ancient Town – “Dukezong” means 月光城 Yuèguāng Chéng Moonlight City in Tibetan – is the old Tibetan quarter of 香格里拉 Xiānggélǐlā Shangri-La, built on the flat by the 建塘镇 Jiàntáng Zhèn Jiantang basin at about 3,300 m and laid out as a caravan station on the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road. Unlike walled Han towns, Dukezong is a grid of earthen Tibetan houses whose streets were once packed-earth trodden by 马帮 mǎbāng horse-caravan mules carrying tea west and horses east; it is reckoned one of the best-preserved Tibetan towns of the Kham route, and the name pairs with a lost 日光城 Rìguāng Chéng Sunlight City that once stood across the river. Entry to the town is free and open – there is no gate fee – and the life is in the lanes, the guesthouses and the nightly circle dances, not behind a ticket turnstile.

The anchor is 龟山公园 Guīshān Gōngyuán Tortoise Hill Park, the low hill at the town’s centre topped by the 大佛寺 Dàfó Sì Great Buddha Temple and, below it, the giant 转经筒 zhuànjīngtǒng prayer wheel – a gold, multi-storey cylinder some 21 m tall and about 60 tonnes that is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the world and needs several people leaning on its handles to turn. Around the hill spreads 月光广场 Yuèguāng Guǎngchǎng Moonlight Square, where locals and visitors join the evening 锅庄 guōzhuāng guozhuang circle dance. Much of the old timber town burned in a fire on 11 January 2014 that took roughly two-thirds of the houses, and what stands now is largely rebuilt in the old footprint – honest to say it is restored rather than original, though the hill, the wheel and the grid survive.

The practical move is to arrive late afternoon and stay past dark. Walk the lanes off the square to find the quiet 藏房 zàngfáng Tibetan courtyard homes and the small 唐卡 tángkǎ thangka and 东巴 Dōngbā (here, Tibetan- rather than Naxi-script) workshops, then climb 龟山公园 Guīshān Gōngyuán for the lit wheel and the town panorama; in the morning the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào museum and the old wells are nearly empty. Note the town is a lived place at 3,300 m with no central heating in the old rooms – ask inns about warmth from November to March – and that the restored core is compact: a half day covers it, an overnight catches the square at both ends of the day.

Practicalities

  • Rating: A free, open Tibetan old town on the Tea-Horse Road; the town itself carries no national scenic grade. It is not a UNESCO World Heritage property – it sits within the wider Diqing cultural landscape, not a listed site.
  • Tickets: Entry to the lanes and squares is free; the 龟山公园 Guīshān Gōngyuán hill and the giant prayer wheel are free to climb. A few small private museums and workshops may ask a modest entry fee, but there is no gate turnstile to the town.
  • Address: 香格里拉市建塘镇 Xiānggélǐlā Shì Jiàntáng Zhèn, Yunnan – the centre of the Shangri-La county town; walkable from most in-town hotels, about 5 km from the airport and roughly 3 km from the long-distance bus station.
  • Time needed: Half a day for the square, Tortoise Hill and the wheel; an overnight to see the lanes at both dawn and the evening dance.
