The Courtyard Where a Premier Began: Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence
驸马巷深青砖静,一门风骨满淮城 Fùmǎ xiàng shēn qīngzhuān jìng, yī mén fēnggǔ mǎn Huái chéng – Deep in Fuma Lane the grey bricks stand quiet; one family’s integrity fills the city of Huai’an
正文:周恩来故居 Zhōu Ēnlái Gùjū the Former Residence of Zhou Enlai sits in Fuma Lane at the heart of old Huai’an – the grey-brick courtyard house where the statesman was born in 1898 and spent his childhood before leaving for the north. The complex is a national heritage site: linked courtyards, carved brick gateways, the family study and the well-preserved living quarters of a Qing-dynasty gentry household, kept much as it stood and open to visitors free of charge with identification.

The gate itself is the photograph most people come for – a dignified brick portal with the residence name in gilded characters above the lintel, flanked by stone details that have weathered a century of canal-town air. Beyond it the lanes narrow, and the noise of the modern city fades within a few steps.
Inside, the rooms read like a biography in furniture and photographs: the nursery, the family hall, the study where a twelve-year-old was said to have promised to study for the rise of China. Wall panels trace the family story and the early years in Huai’an, and the rooms stay deliberately simple – this is a house about origins, not about power.
Visitors move through in a steady flow, and guides walk the courtyards explaining the family history and the boyhood years. The whole visit takes an hour, and it pairs naturally with the memorial hall across town – residence in the morning, memorial after lunch – for a full picture of the city’s most famous son.

Practicalities
Beyond the lane, the same 淮安市 Huái’ān Shì Huai’an City keeps more places worth the detour: 周恩来纪念馆 Zhōu Ēnlái Jìniànguǎn the Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall for the lakeside octagon, 河下古镇 Héxià Gǔzhèn Hexia Old Town for the stone streets, 淮安府署 Huái’ān Fǔshǔ the Huai’an Government Office for the prefect’s halls, or 里运河文化长廊 Lǐ Yùnhé Wénhuà Chángláng the Li Canal Corridor for the evening cruise – four more doors into the same 淮安市 Huái’ān Shì Huai’an City. Once the courtyard is walked, our Huai’an food map fills the day.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say the residence is Huai’an at its most personal scale: grey brick, a deep lane, and a courtyard that sent a boy out into the world and kept his name. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: The residence sits on Fuma Lane off the old city’s main axis – buses from the railway station stop within two blocks, parking is easiest at the Zhenhuai Tower lot two streets over, and the visit is flat-walking throughout. Combine it with the Government Office next door and the memorial hall across town for the full circuit; free entry with ID closes around early evening, so come before mid-afternoon.
