Exianling, the Karst Peaks Called Little Guilin

Hainan is sold as sea and sand, and its west coast is the dry, bright side of the island, so the surprise of 娥仙岭 Éxiānlǐng, Exianling, is that it is limestone. The 娥仙岭生态文化旅游区, the Exianling Eco-Cultural Tourism Area, sits on the 俄贤岭 Éxiánlǐng, Exianling ridge in 东河镇 Dōnghé Zhèn, Donghe town, about fifty-eight kilometres from the Dongfang city centre, beside the 大广坝 Dàguǎngbà, Daguangba reservoir. The ridge is one of the four named mountain ranges the city counts inside its borders. Peak-forests of grey limestone stand up under tropical rainforest, the forested towers reflect in still water below, and because the reflection reads like the Li river the place has long been billed locally as Hainan’s own little Guilin. Exianling, Exian ridge and the nine-peak name E-niang are all in circulation for the same massif; the official form is Exianling.

The geology is the reason to come and the reason the state got involved. Karst peak-forest wrapped in tropical rainforest is rare on Hainan, a limestone landscape usually associated with Guilin far to the north, and the county government describes the area as exactly that: an unusual karst forest under original rainforest cover, developed around the themes of green hills, clear water, strange caves, fine forest and Li culture. Since 2024 it has been managed by Hainan Tourism Investment, the provincial tourism investment company, which pushed the site to 4A on what it calls a protection-first basis through five workstreams: a better visitor centre, better service, upgraded signage, safety facilities and richer tourism provision. Along the sightseeing route the resort added four stopping points – the distant view of 玉龙山 Yùlóng Shān, Yulong Mountain, the immortal-turtle peak, the Exian bay and a Li settlement – and the full driving-and-walking circuit runs fourteen kilometres.

The 4A rating is firm and the paperwork is worth stating plainly, because older online pages get it wrong. In 2024 the provincial tourism resource appraisal committee confirmed Exianling Eco-Cultural Tourism Area as a national 4A scenic area, and the provincial department of tourism and culture’s list dated 7 September 2026 carries it as such – the city’s second 4A, after Hainan Huali Valley took the first in 2022. Within the site the named sights include the “Exian dreamland” and the Orchid-stream flower valley among the rainforest features, but the headline is the cave. The 娥娘洞 Éniáng Dòng, Eniang Cave, also written Exian Cave, is a natural limestone cavern whose stalactites and stalagmites are lit into a stage-set of shapes; platform guides report it as enormous, though the claim that it can hold ten thousand people comes from one source and should be read as reported rather than measured. Above ground, a hiking trail of about two and a half kilometres climbs through cave mouths, gullies and rainforest to a mid-mountain viewing platform over the reservoir, and a boat can be taken out across the water to see the towers doubled on its surface.

The Daguangba reservoir belongs to the same day out. It sits on the middle reaches of the 昌化江 Chānghuà Jiāng, the Changhua River, Hainan’s second-largest reservoir and its largest water and hydropower works, with a dam crest nearly 5,842 metres long and 144 metres high, a total capacity of 1.71 billion cubic metres and 240 megawatts of installed plant; its promoters have long called it the longest earth dam in Asia, a billing repeated by sources rather than an official fact. The reservoir is what gives Exianling its reflections, and it is also the reason the light is best in the morning and the late afternoon, when the water is still. Note the level of a separate claim too: neither the Daguangba scenic spot nor the Exian ridge itself carries an A-grade listing, so a grade is written here for Exianling only.

Plan this as a half-day at minimum and a full day if the cave, the trail and a boat ride all interest you. The road in from Dongfang city takes about one to one and a half hours and winds through a lot of curves, so a confident driver is worth having, and public transport is thin: the usual workaround is to reach Donghe town and then take a taxi, or to use the township coach some platform guides describe running from the Basuo bus station for about ten yuan each way, with a service pattern that changes; treat those times as a snapshot and confirm locally. Around the site food is scarce, so carry water and something to eat, bring mosquito repellent because the forest is damp, wear grip-soled shoes for the steeper stretches, and apply sun protection for the exposed platform. Keep the comparisons clean as well: this is not the single water cave at 儋州 Dānzhōu, Danzhou, nor the stone forest out west at 仙安 Xiān’ān, Xian’an; the point here is the combination of peak-forest, rainforest, cave and reservoir in one place, with the 4A and the fourteen-kilometre route on top.

Practicalities

Tickets. Entry with the cave-and-shuttle package runs about 70 to 80 yuan in 2026 platform snapshots, with concession tickets around 54 yuan and family bundles higher; a boat ride on the reservoir is charged separately, in the region of 30 yuan per person by one account. The official A-grade list does not print a price. As of October 2026, subject to change.

Opening hours. The official listing gives 08:30 to 18:00. Platform pages vary slightly, some opening at 08:00 and some closing at 18:30, and it is worth aiming to be inside before about four in the afternoon.

Closing day. No published closing day, though the official entry notes that actual opening on the day is subject to the site’s own conditions. The best window is the dry season from November into April.

Getting there. Self-drive is the real option: from Dongfang city it is about fifty-eight kilometres and one to one and a half hours, on a winding mountain road, best with an experienced driver. By public transport, take the high-speed rail to Dongfang Railway Station at Basuo, then a taxi to the Basuo bus station and a township coach toward the site, or reach Donghe town and hire a car from there; either way the last leg is awkward, so allow slack in the schedule. The site answers on 0898-31102929 and 0898-31105555.

Dusk over the karst and the reservoir, dark limestone towers against a deep blue sky, the water holding a last warm band of light, forest fading into shadow

flowcloud would say that Exianling is the island’s quiet contradiction – a limestone country in a province everyone thinks of as flat and salt – and that the peak-forest reflected in the reservoir is the one piece of Guilin that the south-west coast keeps for itself.

Getting there: Exianling Eco-Cultural Tourism Area stands on the Exianling ridge at Donghe town, Dongfang, Hainan, about fifty-eight kilometres and one to one and a half hours by winding road from the city centre, beside the Daguangba reservoir; it is rated 4A, awarded 2024, entry with the cave-and-shuttle package is about 70 to 80 yuan in 2026 snapshots (boat charged separately), hours are officially 08:30-18:00 with no published closing day (confirm on 0898-31102929 or 0898-31105555), and self-drive is the practical access (checked October 2026, subject to change).
