Longqiao River: the Underground River and Its Natural Bridge

Lóngqiáng yī zuò, dìxià yī hé; tiānshēng yī qiáo, luòdòng yī guān. — One dragon bridge, one underground river; a bridge born of nature, a cave’s gate.

Longqiao River (龙桥河景区, Lóngqiáo Hé Jǐngqū) is a 4A-rated (September 2019) river-valley destination in Longqiao Tujia township, south of the county seat — a valley built around an underground river (地下河) that surfaces, runs, and disappears again, with the natural bridge (天生桥) that spans it giving the area its name. Tickets run 45 yuan in season and 30 off. It is the county’s quiet scenic option: no fortress, no poem, just water doing what karst water does — under, over and through the mountain.

The Longqiao’s interest is its hydrology. The river’s reach is intermittent because it is a karst stream: the surface flow sinks into the rock, runs as an underground channel, and resurfaces where the geology allows — the same plumbing as the Tiankeng-Difeng pair, at a gentler scale. The natural bridge is what survives when a cavern roof collapses over the stream but the sides hold: the water passes under, the arch remains, and the valley’s path goes through it.

The valley is a walking visit and a cool one — the river’s shade keeps the path comfortable in summer, and the water’s volume follows the rain, so the river is at its most river-like after a wet spell. The bridge is the destination, and the walk to it is the morning. Combine it with the county seat’s lunch rather than the southern karst pair, which is a full day on its own.

flowcloud would say that the county’s third-best water feature is a river you can only see half of — and that the half you can see runs under a bridge the mountain built itself.
