Fenjiezhou Island
The name means “the island that divides the boundary,” and the reason is on the first look at the water — the sea here changes colour and clarity on one side of the island and stays murky on the other, as if someone drew a line through the sea.
分界洲岛 (Fēnjièzhōu Dǎo) sits off the coast of 陵水, about sixty kilometres from Sanya, and it was the first island in China to be rated 5A as a tourism destination. It is a smaller, quieter, more diving-orientated cousin to 蜈支洲, and the two make a natural either/or for a day trip out of the city. Where 蜈支洲 is polished and relentlessly busy, this one is a little more raw — the same glass-clear water, the same white sand, but with less of the theme-park sheen and more of the sense of an island that is still partly itself.
What It Is
A small rocky island roughly one and a half nautical miles off the coast, ringed by a reef and a beach that slopes into water so clear you can pick out individual corals and fish from the shallows. The high visibility is a real, measurable thing — divers regularly report good conditions to a depth of twenty-odd metres, and the island’s reputation rests on it.
Because it sits on the boundary between the tropical 陵水 water and the slightly cooler 万宁 current, the island claims a quirk you can actually see: the sea changes character on the two sides of the island, calmer and clearer on one face, choppier and less transparent on the other. It is the origin of the name and, locals will tell you, the reason the climate and even the fish behave differently on either side.
The island is a full marine-park operation. Diving is the headline: there is a proper PADI-linked dive centre with beginner courses, intro dives and certified fun dives (roughly in the ¥198–980 range depending on depth and whether you have a licence), plus snorkelling in the shallows where the reef is at its best. The 海洋剧场 marine theatre runs dolphin and sea-lion shows, and there is a popular 魔鬼鱼 (manta ray) interaction — a shallow-water encounter where you can feed and swim beside the rays for around ¥80.
Two landmarks stand out above the water. 月光古堡 is a mock-European stone castle on a cliff that has become the island’s most photographed spot — it is not old, it is a built-for-purpose film set, but it photographs beautifully against the sea. 决断谷 is the cliff-top viewpoint, with a wooden platform out over the water and the best west-facing view on the island.
Practicalities
Tickets. There is no separate entry ticket; the entry and the ferry are bundled. The published adult package is ¥119–127 for entry plus return ferry, roughly ¥63 for children, seniors and students. The sightseeing cart or shuttle around the island, if you want it, is a separate item around ¥40. Water-sports and dive packages are bought separately and are considerably cheaper online in advance.
Do you need to book? Yes — tickets are sold by real name, and you should book through the official WeChat account or a regulated OTA. In peak season the island runs a daily visitor cap and the boat slots fill; book one to three days ahead in holidays.
Opening hours. Around 08:30–18:00 in the normal season, with the last boat back from the island around 17:30; some sources quote the last ferry as late as 22:00 through the summer peak, but do not plan on it. Sailings stop in high winds in typhoon season.
Getting there. Address: 陵水黎族自治县, 分界洲岛码头 — the island is about 60 km from Sanya city and roughly on the 东线 between 三亚 and 陵水. The crossing itself is a fourteen-to-fifteen-minute ferry. Buses and the intercity 高铁 to 陵水 are options, but by far the easiest is a taxi or ride-hail from Sanya (about an hour), or a car if you are self-driving — there is parking at the pier.
