Haikou Qilou Old Street

The street under the covered arcades smells of coffee and frying oil and damp stone, and the shutters of the old shopfronts are so worn you can read a century of weather in them. This is the closest Hainan gets to a genuinely old city, and it does not try to be a theme park.

海口骑楼老街 (Hǎikǒu Qílóu Lǎo Jiē) is the historic commercial quarter of Haikou, built mostly in the 1920s to 1940s by Hainanese emigrants who came home from Southeast Asia and carried the money, the style and the outlook of the Nanyang with them. It is the largest and best-preserved group of qilou (arcaded shop-houses) in China — a 3A national historic street and a “Chinese historical and cultural street” — and unlike a restored film set it is still a living neighbourhood: people live above the shops, work on the lanes, and eat at the counters.

What It Is

A whole district of arcaded streets, the core being 中山路, 博爱路, 得胜沙路, 新华路 and 长堤路 — five streets holding more than 600 qilou buildings over about 4.4 kilometres. The qilou form is practical: the ground floor is set back to leave a covered colonnade that keeps the walkway dry in the monsoon and cool in the sun (hence the name, “riding” the floor above). The buildings are two to four storeys, mixing Chinese, colonial and Nanyang-decór detail — Barqoque lintels, iron balconies, decorative shuttered windows, faded plaster — and a few, like 四牌楼, date back to the Southern Song, some 600 years.

The great thing is the range. 中山路 is the polished heart — restored facades, the 骑楼老街牌坊, cafés, 文创 shops and free museums (the 非遗文化馆 showing 黎锦, 椰雕 and 琼剧; the 骑楼风貌展示馆). 得胜沙路 is a working wholesale-clothing street with the landmark “五层楼”. 博爱路 runs between the 东门 seafood-and-dried-goods market and the 西门 antique lane. 水巷口 is the food street, the old pier quarter, where the small famous shops are. And 振东街 is the unrestored, quiet, filmic one.

The anchors: the 海口钟楼, the red-brick 1928 clock tower on 长堤路 (the whole district’s symbol), and the 天后宫, a Yuan-dynasty Mazu temple and the largest in Hainan.

What to Eat

This is the real reason to be here. 水巷口 is the epicentre:

• 吴日彪蒜香猪牛排 — the famous garlic-fried pork/beef ribs, crusty outside and smoky-sweet inside; a small portion around ¥20.
• 辣汤饭 — 陈记’s peppery pork-offal spicy soup, a Haikou breakfast classic, with fried dough sticks; around ¥25 a head.
• 海南粉 / 抱罗粉 / 陵水酸粉 — the three great Hainan noodle styles, ¥10–15.
• 清补凉 — 椰语堂’s coconut-milk version, the definitive cooling dessert.
• 老盐芭乐 / 老盐柠檬 — salty-sweet guava and lemon drinks, a Hainan speciality and the best thing to sip while walking.
• 老爸茶 — the Hainanese teahouse ritual: order a pot of 鹧鸪茶, sit an hour, and watch the city.

Practicalities

Tickets. The street and the public spaces are free and open all day — there is no gate and no entry ticket. The museums and temples are free to enter (the 非遗文化馆, the 骑楼风貌展示馆, 天后宫). Some upper-floor viewing terraces and cafés charge for entrance or require you to buy something to go up and take the elevated photo, but the street itself costs nothing.

Do you need to book? No. There is no reservation for the street or the museums, which open as normal even on Mondays.

Opening hours. The street is open 24 hours (an urban district, not a gated attraction). The shops run about 09:00–22:00, the museums about 09:00–17:30. The best time is 16:00–20:00, when the heat drops and the 19:00 lanterns come on — the night atmosphere is the strongest part of the visit. Go before 11:00 if you want the quiet, empty-street photographs.

Getting there. Address: 海口市龙华区中山路/博爱北路 (core district along 长堤路). Buses 1, 3, 5, 6 and more stop at 钟楼站; G37 stops at 水巷口. A taxi from central Haikou is about ¥10–20. If you drive, use the 骑楼1号 car park (about ¥8 a visit) — the old town streets themselves are tight. Walking is the way; the lanes are small stone-paved and the whole loop (钟楼 → 中山路 → 得胜沙 → 水巷口 → 振东街) is about 1.5–2 hours at a comfortable pace.
