Heshun Ancient Town: The Overseas-Chinese Village of Volcanic Stone in Tengchong, Yunnan

暧暧远人村,依依墟里烟。Ài ài yuǎn rén cūn, yī yī xū lǐ yān – Distant the village of other folk; thick the smoke rising from their homesteads.

和顺古镇 Héshùn Gǔzhèn Heshun Ancient Town is a Han Chinese village of roughly 600 years on the western edge of the Tengchong basin, about 4 km from the seat of 腾冲市 Téngchōng Shì Tengchong City in Baoshan, Yunnan, at around 1,600 m. Settled in the early Ming dynasty, it was renamed from 河顺 Héshùn River-Smooth to 和顺 Héshùn Harmony-Smooth, and it made its name as a 侨乡 qiáoxiāng hometown of overseas Chinese: for centuries its men joined 马帮 mǎbāng mabang caravans on the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road south into 缅甸 Miǎndiàn Myanmar – to 八莫 Bāmò Bhamo on the Irrawaddy and beyond – carrying silk, tea and jade, and some of that money came home as houses. What you walk through is that wealth made visible: lanes and courtyard walls of grey 火山石 huǒshān shí volcanic stone, 三坊一照壁 sānfáng yīzhàobì three-winged courtyards with Burmese-influenced iron windows and coloured glass, and a scatter of 洗衣亭 xǐyī tíng laundress pavilions – covered shelters by the village ponds that returned overseas Chinese built so the women of the house could wash in rain or sun, an institution found nowhere else at this scale. The landmarks are compact: 文昌宫 Wénchāng Gōng Wenchang Palace, the Daoist complex of 元龙阁 Yuánlóng Gé Yuanlong Pavilion above the water, 野鸭湖 Yěyā Hú Wild Duck Lake, and the 和顺图书馆 Héshùn Túshūguǎn Heshun Library.

The honest rating is that of a nationally listed historic-and-cultural town and one of Yunnan’s best-kept living villages; the 5A grade quoted in some listings is worth confirming, as is the current ticket policy, which has been revised repeatedly over the years – an entry ticket is charged, quoted at 55 yuan worth confirming, with some halls ticketed separately worth confirming. The library is the real treasure: founded in 1924 as a village reading society and renamed the Heshun Library in 1928, it is one of the oldest rural libraries in China, holding tens of thousands of volumes including Republican-era newspapers and thread-bound editions worth confirming. 艾思奇故居 Àisīqí Gùjū the former residence of 艾思奇 Àisīqí Ai Siqi (1910-1966) – the philosopher born here as 李生萱 Lǐ Shēngxuān whose 《大众哲学》 explained Marxism to a generation of 1930s readers – is a small courtyard with a study. Buses from Tengchong’s long-distance station and city buses reach the village gate in 10-15 minutes for a few yuan; taxis run 15-20 yuan worth confirming. Give it two to three hours at minimum, and stay a night if you can – after the coaches leave, the lanes belong to residents again.

Come early. The volcanic-stone lanes are at their best before 9:00, when the light is low and water is still being carried along them; walk from the 野鸭湖 shore with its pavilions and reeds, up through 文昌宫, to the library’s two-storey reading room, where villagers still read the day’s papers. Local breakfast is 稀豆粉 xīdòufěn chickpea-flour porridge with 饵丝 ěrsī rice-flour noodles, and the Tengchong classic 大救驾 Dà Jiùjià stir-fried rice cake is on every menu. Honest notes: this is a real village, not a film set – people live here, so keep off doorsteps and out of courtyards; the 陷河 Xiàn Hé sunken-river wetland boardwalk below the village is pleasant but worth confirming whether the walkway is currently open; and the November ginkgo season in nearby 江东村 floods the whole Tengchong basin with day-trippers. The rainy months from June to August leave the lanes slick and overgrown, which has its own beauty and its own leeches. All checked October 2026.
