Stone Streets and Scholars’ Lanes: Hexia Old Town in Huai’an

石板街长灯火近,千年河下读书声 Shíbǎn jiē cháng dēnghuǒ jìn, qiānnián Héxià dúshū shēng – The stone-paved street runs long with lanterns near; a thousand years of Hexia keeps the sound of study

正文:河下古镇 Héxià Gǔzhèn Hexia Old Town lies on Huai’an’s northwest edge, where the old canal trade made a small town of scholars, salt merchants and examination candidates – the district is credited with a remarkable string of top graduates in the Ming and Qing, and its stone-paved main street, flagstone lanes and canal-side houses survive as one of the best-kept old quarters in northern Jiangsu. Entry is free; the streets fill with lantern light after dark.

The main stone street is the town’s spine: slabs worn smooth by porters and carts, shopfronts selling tea and local snacks, and the low eaves of Ming-Qing houses closing over the lane. At dusk the red lanterns come on and the crowd shifts from day-trippers to evening strollers.

Water defines the side lanes. Stone bridges cross the old canals, waterside pavilions lean over the reflections, and the memorial archways at the street heads carry the town’s honours in gilded carving – each one a name from the examination rolls that made Hexia famous.

The scholar theme runs through the smaller sights: former residences of writers and officials, the Wenslou teahouse associated with Huaiyang banquets, and small museums on the imperial examination system. Allow half a day with the teahouse stop, and come hungry – the town’s tea and pastries are part of the walk.

Practicalities

Beyond the archways, the same 淮安市 Huái’ān Shì Huai’an City keeps more within reach: 周恩来故居 Zhōu Ēnlái Gùjū the Former Residence in the old city, 周恩来纪念馆 Zhōu Ēnlái Jìniànguǎn the lakeside Memorial Hall, 淮安府署 Huái’ān Fǔshǔ the Government Office, or 里运河文化长廊 Lǐ Yùnhé Wénhuà Chángláng the canal corridor – four more doors into the same 淮安市 Huái’ān Shì Huai’an City. Once the lanes are walked, our Huai’an food map fills the day.

Words and Names

flowcloud would say Hexia is a town that passed the exam and never left: stone slabs, lantern light, and doorways that still read like a roll of honours. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Hexia sits about five kilometres northwest of downtown – bus routes cover the approach, taxis take twenty minutes, and the stone street is pedestrian only, so wear soft soles for the flagstones. The quarter is free and opens around the clock, though shops keep daytime hours; evenings bring the lanterns and the crowds, while early mornings leave the lanes to residents.
