Tulips by the Old Canal: Dafeng’s Holland Flower Sea

风车转处郁金香,一镇春光落旧港 Fēngchē zhuǎn chù yùjīnxiāng, yī zhèn chūnguāng luò jiùgǎng – Where the windmill turns, the tulips; a town’s spring light falls on the old port

正文:荷兰花海 Hélán Huāhǎi Holland Flower Sea is Dafeng’s engineered spring – a Dutch-themed flower park at Xinfeng town on the city’s northern side, planted on the scale that makes the name literal: millions of tulip bulbs in ribbon beds that bloom from late March into early May, laid out between windmills, waterways and a European-styled town centre beside the old canal port. The project began as a farmland renewal scheme and grew into one of the country’s largest tulip displays, run with Dutch horticultural partners, and the season it anchors – the tulip culture month – pulls coach-loads from across the Yangtze delta every spring.

The tulip ribbons are the headline. Beds run in gradient stripes – crimson into orange into cream – edged by canals and crossed by footbridges, with the red windmills and gable-fronted buildings holding the background. Mid-April is the heavy bloom; the beds are replanted in patterns each year, so no two seasons arrange the colours the same way.

Beyond the tulip fields the park keeps its town act: flower markets where the season’s bulbs and cut flowers are sold, a church-spired wedding quarter booked solid on weekends, the windmill lake with pedal boats, and the greenhouse complex where the cultivation programme shows its work. The old port quarter – Xinfeng began as a canal settlement – gives the place its bones, and evening lighting keeps the streets open after the fields close.

Spring owns the calendar, but the park trades seasons: summer brings sunflowers and lotus on the waterways, autumn lays out chrysanthemum beds, and winter runs the indoor displays and hot-spring hotels that made the area a weekend circuit. Off-season it is a quiet stroll in Dutch costume architecture; in season it is a queue – arrive at opening, walk the outer fields first, and let the crowds thin behind you.

Practicalities

Beyond the flower beds, the same 盐城市 Yánchéng Shì Yancheng City keeps more places worth the season: 丹顶鹤保护区 Dāndǐnghè Bǎohùqū the crane reserve, 大丰麋鹿保护区 Dàfēng Mílù Bǎohùqū the elk reserve, 条子泥 Tiáozǐní Tiaozini’s tidal flats, or 新四军纪念馆 Xīnsìjūn Jìniànguǎn the N4A Memorial – four more doors into the same 盐城市 Yánchéng Shì Yancheng City. Once the petals have fallen, our Yancheng food map fills the table.
