Plum Rows and a Nine-Storey Pen: Hongmei Park at Changzhou
红梅一放满园春,文笔凌云立水滨 Hóngméi yī fàng mǎnyuán chūn, Wénbǐ língyún lì shuǐbīn – When the red plum blooms the whole park turns spring; the Pen Tower stands cloud-high by the water
正文:红梅公园 Hóngméi Gōngyuán Hongmei Park is Changzhou’s front garden – a free city park wrapped around two relics, the nine-storey Wenbi Pagoda and the red-walled Hongmei Pavilion, and planted with the plum groves that give it a name. In blossom weeks the paths run pink, and the city arrives with cameras; the rest of the year the park holds its lakes, rockeries and tea houses in the quiet register of a proper Jiangnan garden.

The avenue past the main gate is the blossom spine – rows of old plum trees leaning over the walks, visitors shuffling beneath them at bloom pace. The pagoda shows through the branches from half the park; climb it for the roofscape of pavilions and the lake below.
Round the water, the park composes itself like a scroll: rock banks, arched bridges, and the pavilion silhouettes mirrored on still mornings. The Auckland-style aviary and children’s corners sit off to one side, leaving the central lawns to kite flyers and tai chi circles.
Give the park a loose half-day: blossom rows first, pagoda climb second, lake circuit third – then exit toward the temple quarter for lunch. Entry is free and the gates run early, which makes the dawn crowd of locals half the show.

Practicalities
Beyond the park, the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天宁宝塔 Tiānníng Bǎotǎ the Tianning Pagoda for the thirteen-tier skyline, 青果巷 Qīngguǒ Xiàng Qingguo Lane for the canal lanes, 春秋淹城遗址 Chūnqiū Yānchéng Yízhǐ the Yancheng ruins for the moated earthworks, or 东坡公园 Dōngpō Gōngyuán Dongpo Park for the poet’s landing place – four more doors into the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City. Once the blossoms are walked, our Changzhou food map fills the day.
