Journey to the West Begins Here: Huaguo Mountain in Lianyungang
云海铺峰迎曙色,水帘深处有猴声 Yúnhǎi pū fēng yíng shǔsè, shuǐlián shēnchù yǒu hóu shēng – A sea of clouds spreads across the peaks to meet the dawn; deep behind the water curtain, the monkeys are calling
正文:花果山 Huāguǒ Shān Huaguo Mountain is the mountain every Chinese reader knows before arriving – the mythical home of the Monkey King in Journey to the West, pinned by Ming-era gazetteers to this granite range just east of 连云港市 Liányúngǎng Shì Lianyungang City. The real mountain backs the legend with substance: its summit Jade Maiden Peak is the highest point in Jiangsu, its Water Curtain Cave hides a waterfall spilling over a cave mouth, and troops of macaques work the paths exactly as the novel promises.

The climb starts through a gate park lined with temples and ancient ginkgos, then rises past the Sanyuan Temple complex – a Buddhist foundation so old its halls predate the novel that made the mountain famous. Stone steps and shuttle roads share the slope, so the summit is reachable for almost any fitness level; most visitors ride up and walk down.
At the top the reward is horizontal: on clear mornings a sea of clouds fills the valleys below while the summit terraces stay in sun, and the view runs from the city’s port cranes to the yellow line of the Yellow Sea. The bronze inscriptions, the summit stone and the crowds of school groups photographing one another give it a pilgrimage feel that no ordinary scenic hill quite matches.
Give the mountain a full day. Ride up early for the clouds, walk down past the Water Curtain Cave when the light reaches the falls, and keep snacks zipped away – the macaques are professional beggars and amateur thieves. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons; summer weekends bring tour groups by the coachload.

Practicalities
Beyond the mountain, the same 连云港市 Liányúngǎng Shì Lianyungang City keeps more places worth the detour: 连岛 Liándǎo Liandao Island for the beach causeway, 海上云台山 Hǎishàng Yúntái Shān Yuntai Mountain for the sea-and-city overlook, 孔望山 Kǒngwàng Shān Kongwang Mountain for the Han-dynasty cliff carvings, or 渔湾 Yúwān Yuwan Valley for the waterfall gorge – four more doors into the same 连云港市 Liányúngǎng Shì Lianyungang City. Once the summit is walked, our Lianyungang food map fills the day.
