玉龙雪山 Yùlóng Xuěshān Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the mountain the town looks at – a range in 玉龙纳西族自治县 Yùlóng Nàxīzú Zìzhìxiàn running about 35 km north-south and 13 km east-west, a scenic area of 415 km², thirteen peaks that stay snow-capped all year, the highest 扇子陡 Shànzi Dǒu at about 5,596 m – the southernmost snow mountain of the northern hemisphere and, in the Naxi telling, the sacred 欧鲁 Ōulǔ “silver rock” above which 玉龙第三国 Yùlóng Dìsānguó waits for the dead. It is a national 5A scenic area – confirmed in the first batch of 66 on 8 May 2007 – a national key scenic area since 1988 and a national geopark, with nineteen modern glaciers above a 4,800-5,000 m snow line. The visit is sold in layers: a mandatory 100-yuan mountain-entry fee, park buses, and three ropeways – 冰川公园索道 Bīngchuān Gōngyuán Suǒdào the big one to the 4,506 m upper station, with the boardwalk climbing to the 4,680 m stone marker; 云杉坪索道 Yúnshānpíng Suǒdào the small one to the 3,240 m spruce meadow; and 牦牛坪索道 Máoniúpíng Suǒdào the middle one to the yak meadow at up to 4,000 m – plus 蓝月谷 Lányuè Gǔ Blue Moon Valley, the old 白水河 Báishuǐ Hé, reached by bus without any ropeway at all. The honest shape is that this mountain is a quota system before it is a view: since 2023 entry runs on real-name, time-slotted booking released seven days ahead through the official mini-programs, with daily caps that sell out within minutes in peak season.
The mechanism is the fault line. The range is a 断层 duàncéng fault-block wall that climbs from the 1,600 m Jinsha valley floor to the 5,596 m summit in a horizontal 13 km, which is why the vegetation bands – meadow, forest, alpine scrub, moss, ice – stack up in a single cable ride, and why the 冰川公园 Bīngchuān Gōngyuán glacier park at the top is a quaternary relic field of 冰塔林 bīngtǎlín ice towers and meltwater channels rather than a living ice cap. 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng, called 游午阁 Yóuwǔ Gé – “the place of dying for love” – in Naxi, carries the 玉龙第三国 Yùlóng Dìsānguó legend of lovers who meet again in the afterlife; it is the mountain’s romantic stop and its low-altitude alternative. Below, 甘海子 Gānhǎizi at about 3,100 m is the transfer hub with the 印象丽江 Yìxiàng Lìjiāng open-air theatre cut into the slope, and 蓝月谷 Lányuè Gǔ holds four lakes – 玉液湖 Yùyè Hú, 镜潭湖 Jìngtán Hú, 蓝月湖 Lányuè Hú, 听涛湖 Tīngtāo Hú – that earn the “little Jiuzhaigou” tag. The infrastructure is new: the 雪川游客港 Xuěchuān Yóukègǎng visitor centre and the 雪山观光火车 Xuěshān Guānguāng Huǒchē sightseeing train both opened on 12 February 2025, and the 牦牛坪 Máoniúpíng ropeway rebuild (532 million yuan, 4,140.5 m of cable, eight-seat cabins) broke ground in November 2025 for a 2028 opening. The comparison with 苍山 Cāngshān beside Dali is exact: that mountain is a stroll with a ropeway attached, this one is a glacier ride with a quota attached.
The local knowledge is about altitude and tickets, in that order. At 4,506-4,680 m the air holds roughly 60 per cent of sea-level oxygen: sleep a night in Lijiang at 2,400 m before you ride, never come the same day from a sea-level city, walk the boardwalk slowly, and buy the 氧气瓶 yǎngqì píng oxygen bottle at the gate rather than the top; children, the elderly and anyone with heart or lung trouble should take 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng at 3,240 m instead and still see the thirteen peaks. Even in summer the summit is cold and wind-scoured – a windproof jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen are the uniform. On the quota: book seven days out through 丽江旅游集团 Lìjiāng Lǚyóu Jítuán or 玉龙雪山服务 Yùlóng Xuěshān Fúwù, expect the release nightly at 20:00 (big ropeway) and 21:00 (others) and the morning slots to vanish first, and book the 甘海子 Gānhǎizi parking space in the same session if you drive. Peak-season last entry runs about 16:30. If the big ropeway is gone, the honest plan B is a full day of 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng, 蓝月谷 Lányuè Gǔ and 白沙 Báishā – the same snow mountain, one-third of the queue.
Practicalities
- Rating: National 5A scenic area, confirmed in the first batch of 66 on 8 May 2007; also a national key scenic area (1988) and a national geopark, inside the 玉龙雪山省级自然保护区 Yùlóng Xuěshān Shěngjí Zìrán Bǎohùqū provincial reserve.
- Tickets: Mountain-entry fee 100 yuan, mandatory for everyone including ropeway-free visits. Park buses run about 20 yuan; ropeways are 冰川公园 Bīngchuān Gōngyuán 140 yuan to 4,506 m, 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng about 60 yuan to 3,240 m and 牦牛坪 Máoniúpíng about 65 yuan to the yak meadow, while the 雪山观光火车 Xuěshān Guānguāng Huǒchē runs about 80 yuan return. Booking is real-name and time-slotted via the official mini-programs, released seven days ahead, with no walk-up window sales at the mountain.

- Time needed: A full day for the big ropeway plus 蓝月谷 Lányuè Gǔ; half a day for 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng and 蓝月谷 Lányuè Gǔ; opening runs about 07:00-17:00 by season, with the big ropeway’s last entry near 16:30, and the quota rather than the clock is the real constraint.

flowcloud would say that the Jade Dragon is a quota before it is a view – 5,596 m at 扇子陡 Shànzi Dǒu, 100 yuan at the gate and a seven-day booking fight for the 4,506 m ropeway – and that the honest move is to sleep a night at 2,400 m, take the first slot, walk slowly, and keep 云杉坪 Yúnshānpíng in your pocket as the plan B, because the mountain punishes ambition at 4,680 m.
