Jianfengling, the Rainforest Ridge Above the Coast

Jianfengling National Forest Park rides the border between Ledong Li Autonomous County and Dongfang, though it is administered from Ledong’s Jianfeng town, and its gates sit about 90 kilometres from downtown Sanya and seven or eight kilometres off the Jianfeng interchange of the G98 ring road. The name means Sharp Peak Ridge, and the ridge delivers: the main summit stands about 1,412 metres above the coastal plain, the highest ground on Hainan’s western side, with eighteen separate summits above a thousand metres gathered inside one block of forest. This is a mountain that rises straight out of farmland and salt flats, which is why the county sells its coastline and its rainforest as a single trip.

The paperwork behind the park is unusually long. The ridge was closed to logging in 1956, became Hainan’s first comprehensive nature reserve in 1960 with a core of about 1,600 hectares, and in 1976 was re-founded as the Jianfengling Tropical Forest Reserve, the island’s first. In 1992 the former national forestry ministry approved a national forest park here; the provincial forestry bureau records it as Hainan’s first national forest park and the country’s first built around tropical rainforest. A decade later, in July 2002, the State Council raised the reserve itself to national status, and in 2019 the whole area was folded into the new Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. One rating needs stating plainly, because the internet gets it wrong: the scenic area is rated 3A, awarded in 2021 on the provincial tourism department’s list of A-grade attractions, and the county’s most recent five-year plan proposes only an upgrade to 4A. It is not a 5A park.

The forest the ridge carries is one of the largest and best-preserved tracts of old-growth tropical rainforest left in China, a claim carried by both national media coverage and provincial forestry material. Walking it is a lesson in altitude: eight vegetation belts stack up the slope, from coastal savanna through seasonal and evergreen monsoon forest to the mossy dwarf forest near the summit. The gentlest introduction is Mingfeng Valley, where a boardwalk of about two kilometres threads big buttress roots, strangler figs, hanging gardens and tree ferns. Higher up, a natural mountain lake known as Tianchi sits at roughly 810 metres, and the main-peak stair trail climbs better than 3,800 steps to a summit where, on the right morning, cloud, forest, mist and sea are said to fill all four directions at once.

The most useful thing a visitor can know in 2026 is a maintenance timeline. From 27 September 2024 the park closed both the main-peak stair trail and the Mingfeng Valley boardwalk for repair and rebuilding, with an expected year of work; the valley boardwalk was finished and reopened on 9 August 2025, but the summit trail’s reopening was still unannounced as of October 2026, and county publicity through mid-2025 was still describing the summit as shut. Confirmation is a phone call away on 0898-85721668. Plan a sunrise climb only after someone at the park says the stairs are open, and note that the park runs no internal shuttle, so all of it is done on foot or in your own car.

Practically, Jianfengling is a self-drive park. The nearest rail stop is Jianfeng Station in Foluo town, on the West Ring high-speed line and open since 30 December 2015, about fifteen minutes away by taxi; do not confuse it with Jianfeng North Station, the newer terminus of the Sanya-Ledong tourist railway at Lingtou village in Jianfeng town, which opened on 16 November 2024 and serves a different side of the mountain. Fuel up before climbing into the park, because the road up to Tianchi is a winding sixteen kilometres with no filling station, and only vehicles of nine seats or fewer are allowed through the gate. The dry months from November into April give the clearest light and the best chance of the ridge’s famous sea of cloud, which forms most often after rain.

Practicalities

Tickets. Entry runs about 55 to 60 yuan for an adult depending on the source, with visitors over 65 admitted free and self-driving into the park free of charge, including the car park at the main gate. Buy through the Zhihu Jianfeng WeChat mini-program or at the gate. Checked October 2026, subject to change.

Opening hours. The park publishes 08:00 to 18:00, the hours carried on the provincial A-grade attractions list; informal night windows for sunrise climbing are reported but are not official and depend on the summit trail being open. Tianchi keeps shorter hours, generally 07:30 to 17:30, and last entry is well before closing.

Closing day. No closing day – Jianfengling is open year-round, and only a typhoon announcement will shut it. The real seasonal line is the summer wet against the winter-spring dry.

Getting there. By road, leave the G98 ring road at the Jianfeng interchange and follow the signs seven to eight kilometres to the gate; from Sanya it is about 90 kilometres in total. There is no tourist shuttle, and only vehicles of nine seats or fewer are allowed up, so a charter car or your own is the workable plan. By rail, Jianfeng Station in Foluo town is the nearby stop on the West Ring line; from there a taxi reaches the gate in about fifteen minutes, though bus services to the park are thin.

flowcloud would say that Jianfengling is the western answer to the island’s famous rainforest parks – a ridge that drops straight from cloud forest to salt coast – and that its long, careful file of reserve notices is the reason the forest is still there to climb.

Getting there: Jianfengling National Forest Park straddles the Ledong-Dongfang border and is entered from Jianfeng town, about 90 kilometres from Sanya, seven to eight kilometres off the G98 Jianfeng interchange, and roughly fifteen minutes by taxi from Jianfeng Station in Foluo town; entry is about 55 to 60 yuan with over-65s free and no internal shuttle, hours are 08:00 to 18:00 with no closing day (confirm the summit trail’s overhaul status on 0898-85721668), and the scenic area is rated 3A, awarded 2021 (checked October 2026, subject to change).
