景迈山古茶林 Jǐngmài Shān Gǔchálín the ancient tea forests of 景迈山 Jǐngmài Shān Jingmai Mountain lie in 惠民镇 Huìmín Zhèn Huimin Town, 澜沧拉祜族自治县 Láncāng Lāhùzú Zìzhìxiàn Lancang County, in the southwestern mountains of 普洱 Pǔ’ěr. On 17 September 2023 the 普洱景迈山古茶林文化景观 Pǔ’ěr Jǐngmài Shān Gǔchálín Wénhuà Jǐngguān cultural landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 45th session in Riyadh – the world’s first tea-themed World Heritage property, China’s 57th and Yunnan’s sixth worth confirming. The property covers some 19,100 ha worth confirming with a 7,168-ha core worth confirming, and its components read like a botany exam: five blocks of ancient tea forest totalling 1,180 ha, nine traditional villages, and three 分隔防护林 fēnggé fánghùlín separator forests that fence the tea in. The tea is the point: more than a million ancient trees worth confirming, mostly 2-5 m tall with the biggest near 12 m, planted by 布朗族 Bùlǎngzú Blang and 傣族 Dǎizú Dai growers since at least the 10th century worth confirming using 林下开垦 línxià kāikěn under-forest planting – 乔木在上、茶树居中、草本在下 qiáomù zài shàng, cháshù jū zhōng, cǎoběn zài xià, a three-storey forest in which the tea is a crop and the forest is the farm. Villages like 翁基 Wēngjī (Blang) and 糯干 Nuògān (Dai) sit ringed by their own tea, and the 蜂王树 Fēngwáng Shù bee-king tree in 芒景上寨 Mángjǐng Shàngzhài – an 800-year-old banyan wearing seventy-odd hives worth confirming – stands as the emblem of the arrangement.
There is no gate ticket at present worth confirming – the mountain is free to walk, though the park asks visitors to register in advance and village entrances collect a small parking fee worth confirming – which is the single best fact about a World Heritage site. The drive is the cost: roughly 200 km and three hours from 普洱 Pǔ’ěr city worth confirming, about three and a half from 西双版纳 Xīshuāngbǎnnà Xishuangbanna worth confirming, and 74 km up from the 澜沧 Láncāng county town; the 普洱高铁汽车站 Pǔ’ěr Gāotiě Qìchēzhàn runs a direct minibus for about 150 yuan worth confirming, and 澜沧景迈机场 Láncāng Jǐngmài Jīchǎng puts you within an hour of 惠民镇 Huìmín Zhèn. Sleep in the villages: 翁基 Wēngjī has the largest cluster of 民宿 mínsù guesthouses at a couple of hundred yuan a night worth confirming, 糯干 Nuògān has stilt-house rooms by the water, and the ridge hamlets sell their balconies as cloud-sea platforms. Inside the villages the spending is voluntary – 制茶 zhìchá tea-making sessions from about 129 yuan worth confirming, 火塘烤茶 huǒtáng kǎochá hearth-roasted tea in a Blang kitchen, and tea bought by the 饼 bǐng cake.
Timing here is altitude arithmetic. The 云海 yúnhǎi cloud sea shows best from November to April, when dry nights and warm days build fog in the valleys, and the viewing hour is 6:30 to 9:00 from the 景迈大寨 Jǐngmài Dàzhài platform or the 芒洪八角塔 Mánghóng Bājiǎo Tǎ viewpoint worth confirming. Spring, March to May, is the tea calendar: 山康茶祖节 Shānkāng Cházǔ Jié, the Blang tea-ancestor festival honouring 帕哎冷 Pà’āilěng, falls in April worth confirming, and the spring pick runs through the villages. Autumn, September to November, is the clear-photography season; the summer rains from June to September bring leeches, slick roads and unreliable cloud worth confirming. Give the mountain two days and one dawn: day one for 翁基 Wēngjī and the 大平掌 Dàpíngzhǎng core forest on its kilometre of boardwalk worth confirming, day two for 糯干 Nuògān and the 茶祖庙 Cházǔ Miào before the light goes flat – and film buffs may recognise 糯干 Nuògān from the hit road movie 一点就到家 Yīdiǎn Jiù Dàojiǎ, shot in these lanes worth confirming, a village quietly living with the consequences. Dress for a dawn 10-15°C colder than the plains worth confirming, and treat the old trees as relics – picking, carving and climbing are all banned. All checked October 2026.
