举子园 (Jǔzǐ Yuán) sits on the bank of Hanfeng Lake in Kaizhou, Chongqing, built as China’s first park devoted to the imperial examination (科举) tradition. It revives the district’s old claim as a “land of exam candidates” (举子之乡), where scholars once set out for the capital exams.

At its centre stand the rebuilt Qing-dynasty examination cells (考棚号舍), a long row of stone cubicles where candidates sat their multi-day tests. Beside them the Wenfeng Pagoda (文峰塔) was raised to tip the local fortunes toward scholastic success.

On weekends a hanfu bridge-crossing rite (汉服过桥礼) sends visitors over the water in costume, and after dark a floating night-boat show (夜船演艺) plays out across the lake. It is history staged as theatre, and the lanterns make the exam park feel like a festival.

What the Locals Know
The garden is ticketed, with the night-boat show running on its own schedule (usually weekend evenings — confirm the time before you go, as it shifts by season). Go for the hanfu rite in the late afternoon and stay for the show; the cell row is best in the soft morning light. All checked October 2026.
flowcloud would say that nothing in Kaizhou makes the old exam grind look half as glamorous as a lantern-lit boat on the lake. All checked October 2026.
Where to find it: On the Hanfeng Lake shore within Kaizhou’s urban area, a short taxi or walk from the lakeside ring road, with the pagoda visible from the water. All checked October 2026.
