The Blue Quarter: Horse Carts and Painted Gates in Kazanqi, Yining, Xinjiang
蓝门小巷马蹄轻,杏树杏花满院迎 Lánmén xiǎoxiàng mǎtí qīng, xìngshù xìnghuā mǎn yuàn yíng – Blue gates, small lanes, light horse hooves; apricot trees in bloom welcome guests into every courtyard.
喀赞其 Kāzànqí Kazanqi is the old craft quarter of Yining – blocks of blue, turquoise and mint-green houses where the paint colours are said to denote different trades, and where the horse-drawn carriages called hādákè still work the lanes as both taxi and attraction (worth confirming the details for carriage routes, since the quarter is residential and the drivers keep to agreed circuits). The name means the place of cauldrons, for the coppersmiths who worked here; today the quarter lives on courtyard visits – families open their painted gates to show the grape arbours, the jam-making, the apple trees that shade every second yard.

A visit splits cleanly. Ride a carriage once for the overview: the driver sings the quarter’s history, the horse walks at gossip pace, and every second corner produces a better colour combination than the last. Then walk: the craft shops, the silversmiths and hat makers, the tiny cafés selling the Yining ice cream and warm naan, and the courtyards where grandmothers will fill a bowl of mulberries off the tree. The stock answer in kind: ride early when the lanes are in shade, walk late when the paint glows, and buy your ice cream from the doorway freezers where the local families queue.
Call it honestly: Kazanqi is Ili’s most photograph-ready neighbourhood, and the popularity brings carriage queues at the main gate and entrance tickets to some courtyards (worth confirming the details for which courtyards charge and which accept a purchase instead). What keeps it honest is that people actually live here – laundry lines over the blue fences, children racing the carriages, bread ovens working behind the ice-cream shops. Come in the morning for the work day, bring small notes for the jam sellers, and wear shoes that forgive cobblestones.

Practicalities
Nearly everything else on this Ili list trades a different mood on the same prefecture: choose 喀拉峻草原 Kālājùn cǎoyuán the Kalajun grassland for the great outdoors, 那拉提草原 Nàlátí cǎoyuán the Nalati grassland for the air meadow, 霍城薰衣草田 Huòchéng xūnyīcǎotián the lavender fields for the purple fortnight, or 伊宁六星街 Yīníng Liùxīngjiē the Liuxing streets for the accordion quarter – four more doors into the same 伊犁哈萨克自治州 Yīlí Hāsàkè Zìzhìzhōu Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Once the quarters are planned, our Ili food map fills the eating hours.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say Kazanqi is the prefecture’s colour wheel: blue for the gates, green for the arbours, and every lane a different shade of welcome. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: The quarter starts just south-east of central Yining – walkable from much of the city – and carriages board from the square by the blue main gate, priced by the circuit you choose; the lanes themselves are best walked on the way out. All checked November 2026.
