The Mountain Where Go Was Born: Lanke Mountain

王质观棋斧柯烂,一局仙境石梁横 Wáng Zhì guān qí fǔ kē làn, yī jú xiānjìng shíliáng héng – Wang Zhi watched one game and his axe handle rotted; across the immortal scene a stone beam lies athwart

烂柯山 Lànkē Shān Lanke Mountain, south of 衢州市区 Qúzhōu Shìqū downtown Quzhou, is the home mountain of Chinese Go – the place where the Western Jin tale of 王质 Wáng Zhì Wang Zhi set the game’s mythology in stone. The woodcutter climbed into these hills, found two boys playing Go on a rock, set his axe down to watch, and when the game ended his axe handle – 柯 kē – had rotted to nothing and a lifetime had passed below. The word 烂柯 lànkē “rotted axe” has meant Go ever since; the mountain holds the earliest copyright on the idea that a game can outlast the world.

The geological star is 天生石梁 Tiānshēng Shíliáng the Natural Stone Beam, a slab of Danxia sandstone a hundred meters long and ten thick, bridging a bowl of green hills like the lid of a fallen ark. Beneath it the 棋盘 qípán giant Go board is carved into the flat rock, its grid as wide as a courtyard; stand at the beam’s edge and the board, the pine slopes and the bowl of hills compose the whole legend in one frame.

The Go cult is kept deliberately: stone steles around the park carve the tale in successive dynasties’ hands, a chess garden pins famous games on boards the size of tables, and on festival days the city’s Go clubs come up to play under the beam – sometimes simultaneously, forty boards at once, the mountain turning into the loudest quiet in Quzhou. The pavilion archive keeps visiting-master records; the rocks keep the original storyline.

Half a day is plenty: the climb to the beam is a stone stair through pines, the circuit of steles takes an unhurried hour, and the city sits close enough that lunch is a ten-minute drive. Pair it with 衢州古城墙 Qúzhōu Gǔchéng Qiáng the old city wall and 水亭门 Shuǐtíngmén the gate quarter for a day that starts with a legend and ends with shaobing.

Practicalities

  • Entry is free or token-priced; the stair climb takes 20 minutes and is manageable for most ages.
  • The stone floor under the beam is slick after rain – the shaded bowl dries slowest there.
  • Weekends bring the Go clubs; if you want the bowl quiet, come weekday mornings.
  • No cable car and little shade at midday – the pine trail is the cooler route up.

Words and Names

烂柯 làn kē rotted axe-handle, the legend that names the mountain and the game; 王质 Wáng Zhì Wang Zhi, the woodcutter who watched one game; 天生石梁 Tiānshēng Shíliáng the Natural Stone Beam, the hundred-meter sandstone span; 围棋 wéiqí Go, the board game whose Chinese mythology starts here; 仙人对弈 xiānrén duìyì immortals playing a match, the scene carved into the rock board. Beyond the legend mountain, the same 衢州市 Qúzhōu Shì Quzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 江郎山 Jiāngláng Shān the three world-heritage pillars, 龙游石窟 Lóngyóu Shíkū the underground riddle, 根宫佛国 Gēngōng Fóguó the root-carved kingdom, or 廿八都古镇 Niànbādū Gǔzhèn the three-province garrison town – four more doors into the same 衢州市 Qúzhōu Shì Quzhou City. Once the stone beam has had its game, our Quzhou food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Lanke Mountain is a clock made of pine and sandstone: an axe that rotted into a proverb, a game still being played under the beam, and a city that treats one old story as its north star. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Lanke Mountain lies fifteen kilometers south of downtown Quzhou – city buses run to the stone-beam gate in about forty minutes, taxis take twenty, and the beam trail starts straight from the lower lot. All checked November 2026.
