家家流水,户户垂杨。Jiājiā liúshuǐ, hùhù chuíyáng – Every house has running water; every door hangs willow.
丽江古城 Lìjiāng Gǔchéng Lijiang Old Town – 大研古城 Dàyán Gǔchéng Dayan Old Town, the part everyone means by the name – is the town the Naxi laid on the Lijiang plain at about 2,400 m, founded at the end of the Song and the beginning of the Yuan and at its height through the Ming and Qing. It has no wall and never did: the 木氏 Mùshì Mu clan, who ruled Lijiang as imperial 土司 tǔsī native chieftains for some five centuries, is said to have refused one because a 口 frame around the 木 character spells 困 – trapped (a story, not a record, but the town is still wall-less). It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 4 December 1997 at the 21st session (criteria ii, iv and v, reference 811bis, extended in 2012), and the property has three component parts: 大研古城 Dàyán Gǔchéng including 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán Black Dragon Pool, the 白沙民居建筑群 Báishā Mínjū Jiànzhúqún Baisha housing cluster 8 km north, and the 束河民居建筑群 Shùhé Mínjū Jiànzhúqún Shuhe housing cluster 4 km north-west – 145.6 ha in all inside a 582.3 ha buffer zone. Dayan itself runs about 5.39 km² and still houses roughly 6,000 households and some 25,000 residents. Entry to the streets is free and open around the clock; what a visitor buys is a bed, a meal and two paid sights – 木府 Mùfǔ the Mu palace and 万古楼 Wàngǔlóu on 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān. The honest shape is a lived Naxi town with a world-heritage label, not a ticketed 景区 jǐngqū.

The water is the mechanism. Snowmelt off 玉龙雪山 Yùlóng Xuěshān fills 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán, and the 玉河 Yùhé Jade River runs south out of it and splits into 东河 Dōnghé, 中河 Zhōnghé and 西河 Xīhé – east, central and west branches – each of which divides again into countless channels, so that 主街傍河 zhǔ jiē bàng hé the main streets run beside water and 小巷临渠 xiǎo xiàng lín qú the lanes front onto channels, with 354 bridges of stone and wood over them. The houses explain the survival: 穿斗式 chuāndǒu shì column-and-tie timber frames in mud brick, a craft the Naxi took from Ming-era Nanjing builders, give the “墙倒屋不塌” qiáng dǎo wū bù tā – the wall falls, the house stands – behaviour that carried the town through the Mw 7.0 earthquake of 3 February 1996 with its plan and core buildings intact, which is exactly what the UNESCO citation says. 四方街 Sìfāng Jiē, the market square at the centre, was the caravan floor of the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road trade, and 木府 Mùfǔ – the Mu palace, about 40 yuan – is where 徐霞客 Xú Xiákē was received by 木增 Mù Zēng in 1639. The living culture is 东巴 Dōngbā Dongba: a pictographic script still read by priests, paper made from 荛花 ráohuā wikstroemia bark, and music played in the lanes. The comparison with 大理古城 Dàlǐ Gǔchéng Dali Old Town is exact in reverse – Dali is quieter and less rebuilt, while this is the bigger, louder show, a Naxi town that turned itself into Yunnan’s most famous stage without ever building a wall.

The local pattern is water-first. The 忠义市场 Zhōngyì Shìchǎng south-gate market runs from first light – 土鸡米线 tǔjī mǐxiàn chicken noodle bowls, produce and 粑粑 bāba cakes sold to residents – and 四方街 Sìfāng Jiē wakes with the locals’ 打跳 dǎtiào circle dance before the tour coaches. 五一街 Wǔyī Jiē and 七一街 Qīyī Jiē hold the quiet lanes and the courtyard homes; the bar strip around 新华街 Xīnhuá Jiē is the one lane to avoid if you sleep early. The 大水车 Dàshuǐchē big waterwheel by 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán is the postcard gate and also, for independent visitors, the one place the old-town maintenance fee is asked: 50 yuan per entry, valid 365 days, under the municipal rule published in July 2025 and effective 1 August 2025 (tour groups pay through agencies). Bring wheels that survive cobbles, or ask the inn for a porter – and ask about heating between November and March, because at 2,400 m with no central heating a Naxi courtyard room is a cold room.
Practicalities
- Rating: UNESCO World Heritage since 4 December 1997 (criteria ii, iv and v; extended 2012) and a national historic-and-cultural city (State Council, 8 December 1986); the streets themselves carry no national scenic grade – Dayan is a free, open town, not a graded 景区.
- Tickets: Free entry to the streets, open around the clock. The 古城维护费 Gǔchéng Wéihùfèi old-town maintenance fee is 50 yuan per entry, valid 365 days under the July 2025 rule effective 1 August 2025; tour groups pay through agencies, while independent visitors are asked mainly at 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán. Inside, 木府 Mùfǔ is about 40 yuan adult and 万古楼 Wàngǔlóu about 35, and shows such as 《丽水金沙》 Lìshuǐ Jīnshā start around 280.
- Address: 丽江市古城区 Lìjiāng Shì Gǔchéng Qū Gucheng District, Yunnan – give a driver a gate name, because cars cannot enter the cobbled core: 大水车 Dàshuǐchē the waterwheel gate north by 黑龙潭 Hēilóngtán, 忠义市场 Zhōngyì Shìchǎng the south market gate, 北门坡 Běiménpō the north slope ramp. From 丽江站 Lìjiāng Zhàn it is about 8 km and 20-30 minutes by taxi, and from 三义机场 Sānyì Jīchǎng about 30 km and 40-50 minutes.
- Time needed: Half a day for 四方街 Sìfāng Jiē, 大水车 Dàshuǐchē and the main lanes; a full day with 木府 Mùfǔ, 狮子山 Shīzǐ Shān and 忠义市场 Zhōngyì Shìchǎng; two nights to catch the morning water and the evening quiet.

flowcloud would say that Lijiang Old Town is a town without walls – 5.39 km² of Naxi grid at about 2,400 m, fed by one snowmelt river split into three branches and 354 bridges, UNESCO since 1997 – and that the honest move is to sleep inside it for two nights and walk the water at seven in the morning, because 五一街 Wǔyī Jiē is the town and 新华街 Xīnhuá Jiē is the bar bill.
