The Great Wall of the South: Linhai’s Taizhou City Wall
千年府城枕江畔,半入城墙半入街 Qiānnián fǔchéng zhěn jiāng pàn, bàn rù chéngqiáng bàn rù jiē – The thousand-year prefecture pillow rests by the river; half into the wall, half into the streets
临海古城 Línhǎi Gǔchéng Linhai Old City keeps the 台州府城墙 Tāizhōu Fǔ Chéngqiáng Taizhou Prefecture wall, better known as 江南长城 Jiāngnán Chángchéng the Great Wall of the South – a 4.7-kilometer stone rampart begun in the Eastern Jin dynasty that climbs 揽胜门 Lǎnshèng Mén Victory Gate’s two hundred steep steps, rides the backs of the hills, and dives down to the 灵江 Líng Jiāng Lingjiang river it was built to hold back. The wall is both fortress and levee: its tapered barbicans and half-moon 马面 mǎmiàn buttresses are credited as the prototype that Qi Jiguang’s northern Great Wall later copied, and the flood gates that once turned back tides still hinge in their frames. The whole quarter now anchors the 5A 台州府城文化旅游区 Tāizhōu Fǔchéng Wénhuà Lǚyóu Qū Taizhou Fucheng Cultural Tourism Area.

Below the wall the city runs on Ming street geometry: 紫阳街 Zǐyáng Jiē Ziyang Street, a kilometer of stone-paved shopfronts still signed by trade – medicinals, candies, scissors, bronze – under whitewashed fire-wall arches that step down every lane. The 千年紫阳 qiānnián Zǐyáng block keeps its wells, its better-than-average plum syrup, and the white pagoda of 巾山 Jīn Shān Jin Mountain lifting above the roofs at the street’s south end.

The wall walk is the reason to come: enter at Victory Gate, climb the two hundred steps to the white observation deck, then follow the ridge west past the 梅园 Méiyuán plum garden, the cannon platforms and the smoke towers, watching the river bend and the city fall away on both sides. Two hours of ups and downs ends at 望江门 Wàngjiāng Mén River-View Gate – descend into the streets and the noodle shops are waiting.
Budget a full day: wall in the cool of the morning, Ziyang Street’s snacks at noon – 麦虾 mài xiā wheat-scrape soup and 蛋清羊尾 dànqīng yángwěi fried custard fritters both have flagship counters here – then 东湖 Dōng Hú the East Lake gardens in the soft light, where Song-dynasty pavilions sit on causeways a stone’s throw from the wall’s east moat.
Practicalities
- The wall ticket runs about 65 yuan and covers the full ridge walk; the East Lake and the wall sell a cheaper combined pass at either gate.
- The 200 steps at Victory Gate are the work-out; the elderly-friendly entrance is at the north end where the ridge flattens.
- 临海站 Línhǎi Zhàn Linhai station sits fifteen minutes by taxi from the old city; Ziyang Street is car-free – park at the wall’s lots.
- April’s plum blossom on the ramparts and November’s clear light are the photographers’ seasons; summer afternoons are furnace hours on the open wall.

Words and Names
台州府城墙 Tāizhōu Fǔ Chéngqiáng Taizhou Prefecture wall, the “Great Wall of the South”; 紫阳街 Zǐyáng Jiē Ziyang Street, the thousand-year shop lane; 马面 mǎmiàn the half-moon buttress towers Qi Jiguang carried north; 巾山 Jīn Shān Jin Mountain, the twin-pagoda hill inside the city; 戚继光 Qī Jìguāng Qi Jiguang, the Ming general who drilled his anti-pirate army here. Beyond the southern wall, the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天台山 Tiāntái Shān the temple mountain of the Tiantai school, 神仙居 Shénxiānjū the rhyolite peaks of Xianju, 石塘渔村 Shítáng Yúcūn the granite fishing village of Wenling, or 蛇蟠岛 Shépān Dǎo the quarry caves of Sanmen Bay – four more doors into the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City. Once the ramparts have had their morning, our Taizhou food map fills the table.
flowcloud would say Linghai is a wall that works: two thousand years of tides held back, a wall copied north and improved, and below it a street that still sells scissors where it always sold scissors – the prefecture is gone, the city never noticed. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: Linhai Old City sits fifteen minutes by taxi from Linhai high-speed station – city buses run into the old town every ten minutes, the wall lots sit below Victory Gate, and Ziyang Street is car-free throughout. All checked November 2026.
