泸沽湖 Lúgū Hú Lugu Lake is the plateau lake on the provincial border – between 盐源县 Yǎnyuán Xiàn Yanyuan County in 凉山彝族自治州 Liángshān Yízú Zìzhìzhōu, Sichuan, and 宁蒗彝族自治县 Nínglàng Yízú Zìzhìxiàn Ninglang Yi Autonomous County under Lijiang, Yunnan – sitting at 2,690 m with an area of roughly 50 km² (surveys quote 48.5-50.4), an average depth of 45 m, a maximum of 93 m and transparency to about 11 m. Sichuan holds about two-thirds of the water and Yunnan one-third; the lake counts five full islands, three peninsulas and one tombolo, and it is the highest-altitude lake in Yunnan and one of China’s deepest freshwater bodies. It is a national 4A scenic area (rated November 2009) that passed the 5A landscape-quality evaluation in March 2025 and is in the final push for 5A creation; entry runs 70 yuan with three-day validity, booked online by real name, and the 环湖公路 Huánhú Gōnglù ring road runs about 70-76 km. The lake’s own currency is the 猪槽船 Zhūcáo Chuán pig-trough boat and the 木楞房 Mùléng Fáng log house. The honest shape is a lake you circle slowly, in a Mosuo village, for at least two days – the drive from Lijiang is about 200 km and four to five hours.
The mechanism is culture as much as water. 泸沽湖 Lúgū Hú is a fault-sunk plateau lake in the 横断山脉 Héngduàn Shānmài Hengduan mountains, and the people the world comes for are the 摩梭人 Mósuō Mosuo, who live in matrilineal households – a 祖母屋 Zǔmù Wū grandmother’s house, brothers and sisters, their children and grandchildren under one roof, with property and lineage passing through the women. The 阿夏 Āxià visiting relationship – what outsiders shorthand as 走婚 zǒuhūn “walking marriage” – means partners keep their own households and children belong to the mother’s family; it is a living family form, described in official registers as a 活化石 huóhuàshí “living fossil” of human family history, and it is a household economy, not a spectacle. The calendar has its own markers: the 成丁礼 Chéngdīng Lǐ coming-of-age at thirteen, the 甲搓舞 Jiǎcuō Wǔ circle dance at the 篝火晚会 Gōuhuǒ Wǎnhuì bonfire nights, and the 转山节 Zhuǎnshān Jié mountain-turn festival on the twenty-fifth of the seventh lunar month at 格姆女神山 Gémǔ Nǚshén Shān, the sacred peak on the north shore. Conservation is the other half of the story: a 川滇 Chuān Diān Sichuan-Yunnan joint management mechanism, ten lakeside villages of some 4,400 people with more than 2,200 working in tourism, 156.2万 yìbǎi wǔshíliù wàn 1.562 million visitors in 2025, and a lake health score of “very healthy” ten years running. The comparison with 洱海 Érhǎi Erhai is exact: Erhai is a day trip around a lake, this one is a two-night stay on its shore.
The local pattern is a clockwise ring with the light. Sunrise is the east and north shore – 里格半岛 Lǐgé Bàndǎo Lige peninsula, the heart-shaped bay that is the lake’s postcard, and 尼赛 Nísài with its 情人树 Qíngrén Shù lover trees – while sunset belongs to 女神湾 Nǚshén Wān Goddess Bay, and the night sky belongs to 蒗放 Làngfàng on the south shore. 大落水村 Dàluòshuǐ Cūn has the facilities and the coach terminus; 里格 Lǐgé has the view but private cars stop outside the peninsula; 蒗放 Làngfàng and 达祖 Dázǔ are the quiet ends. Practical notes: the 70-yuan ticket covers the ring road, the 里格 Lǐgé viewpoint, 草海 Cǎohǎi and the 走婚桥 Zǒuhūn Qiáo walking-marriage bridge, while 猪槽船 Zhūcáo Chuán rides (about 50-150 yuan), the 格姆女神山 Gémǔ Nǚshén Shān ropeway (about 100-110) and the 摩梭博物馆 Mósuō Bówùguǎn (about 35) are separate; there is a refund procedure for drivers merely transiting the scenic area, March to October is the high season, winter brings gulls and empty lanes, and the 7-9月 Qī-Jiǔ Yuè rainy season is also the mushroom season. Respect the house rules of the culture: a 祖母屋 Zǔmù Wū visit is a home, not a show.
