Luhuitou Park
From the top of the hill the whole of Sanya bends around you — the bay, the city, the sea on three sides — and for once the view is the reason you climbed, not the obstacle.
鹿回头 (Lùhuítóu, “the deer turned its head”) is a forested headland that juts south off the tip of the city’s peninsula, and its summit is the single best free panorama in Sanya. It is the place the city’s nickname comes from, it has been free to enter since the summer of 2022, and yet it is oddly underrated compared to the beach-entrance attractions. This is partly a timing thing. The park is at its loveliest at dusk, when the light softens and the city’s lights begin to come on across the water, and most tourists are still sat in traffic heading home from the beach.
What It Is
A hillside park, about 181 metres at its high point, spread over the southern tip of 鹿回头半岛 — an almond of land that reaches out into the sea and is ringed by water on three sides. The peninsula is the natural boundary between 三亚湾 on the west and 大东海 on the east, which is why the summit gives you a sweep of both plus the islands beyond.
The park is centred on the 鹿回头雕塑: a fifteen-metre granite deer with its head turned back over its shoulder, mounted on a high plinth, and it is the thing in the picture when anyone mentions the city. The legend it commemorates is a 黎族 story — a young hunter chases a beautiful deer to the edge of a cliff where the sea cuts off all escape, and just as he draws his bow the deer turns its head, becomes a fair maiden, and the two fall in love. It is the reason Sanya is known as 鹿城, “the Deer City,” and every hotel name and souvenir shop in town plays on it.
From the viewing platform the 270-degree sweep takes in 三亚湾 and the silhouette of 凤凰岛, 大东海, the city skyline behind, and on a clear day the sea running to the horizon. It is a better sunset point than most of the beaches, because you are high enough to see the light actually drop behind the city.
What to Do
Walk, mainly. The main path up from the 鹿回头公园 entrance to the summit is an easy twenty-to-thirty minute slope through tropical forest, and there are secondary paths and viewpoints off it. A sightseeing cart (in practice a small electric vehicle) runs the loop from the entrance; the round-trip fare is around ¥28, and it is worth it if the day is hot or you want to save your legs for the top.
Things to look for on the way up: the love-themed corners the park leans on heavily (a large heart sculpture, 情侣树 and a few 海誓山盟 stone inscriptions) which are as popular with young couples as the view itself; the 观海亭 pavilions that frame the water; and the monkeys, a small troop of macaques that live in the forest and have learned to expect snacks. Give them a wide berth and do not carry food openly — they are bold and they will try to take it.
Come for the sunset, stay for the night. The park stays open late, the city lights switch on across the bay, and the view turns from panorama to glitter. The light around 18:30–19:30 is the reason to go.
Practicalities
Tickets. The park is free since 1 July 2022. It was a paid attraction before that, and the fee was dropped as a policy move — so ignore the old listings that quote a ¥35 or ¥42 entry ticket, that no longer applies.
Do you need to book? Entry is free but by real-name online reservation, usually through the park’s own booking channel or a major OTA platform. In the ordinary off-season you can often walk in, but on a public holiday the free-entry quota can fill — a quick online reservation a day ahead is the safe habit. The sightseeing cart, if you want it, is a separate paid item.
Opening hours. Around 08:00–22:30, with last entry typically at 21:30–22:00. Evening entry from about 18:00 onwards is the sweet spot — free, cooler, and the lights come on as the sky darkens.
Getting there. Address: 鹿岭路鹿回头半岛, 三亚市. Buses 26, 54, 55 and 微4 stop near the park; from the city centre it is a short taxi or ride-hail of about ten to fifteen minutes. There is parking at the base if you drive. The summit is reached by the walking path or the ¥28 cart.
flowcloud would say that a free 270-degree view of an entire city is the cheapest thing in Sanya, and that the deer only heads back because the boy was worth the chase.
