大漠孤烟直,长河落日圆。Dà mò gū yān zhí, cháng hé luò rì yuán – In the great desert a lone wisp of smoke rises straight; over the long river the setting sun is round.
彩色沙林 Cǎisè Shālín the Colourful Sand Forest is a sand-landform scenic area in 杜旗堡村 Dùqíbǎo Cūn Duqibao village, 马街镇 Mǎjiē Zhèn Majie Town, 18 km southeast of 陆良 Lùliáng Luliang county town – one of the 云南三林 Yúnnán Sān Lín “three forests of Yunnan” alongside 石林 Shílín the Stone Forest and 元谋土林 Yuánmóu Tǔlín the Yuanmou Earth Forest. The sand body – ancient sea-and-shore deposits, uplifted and carved by rain and wind – stands in pillars, walls and ridges mostly 15-30 m high, banded in red, yellow, white, grey, blue, purple and black by iron and calcium minerals; the listed area covers about 25 km² with a 6 km² core worth confirming. The scenic area, opened in 1988 and rated 4A in 2001, has hosted five international 沙雕 shādiāo sand-sculpture festivals since 2001, leaving a permanent yard of large works worth confirming, and folds in the 五峰山 Wǔfēng Shān Wufeng hill forest and 龙颜湖 Lóngyán Hú Longyan reservoir. 陆良 Lùliáng sits on the largest farming basin in Yunnan worth confirming and was the heartland of 爨文化 Cuàn Wénhuà Cuan culture, the 爨氏 Cuàn Shì Cuan clan’s four-century rule recorded on two great stele – the 405 爨宝子碑 Cuàn Bǎozǐ Bēi Cuan Baozi Stele at 曲靖一中 Qūjìng Yīzhōng Qujing No. 1 Middle School and the 458 爨龙颜碑 Cuàn Lóngyán Bēi Cuan Longyan Stele at 薛官堡 Xuēguānbǎo Xueguanbao, both first-batch national relics.

The honest note is that this is a small site built around one geological idea, and it succeeds or fails on your appetite for colour and climbing. The gate ticket is quoted at 65 yuan online, about 70 at the window worth confirming, with half price for 60-69-year-olds and free entry over 70 worth confirming; the area opens roughly 9:00-17:00, last entry 17:00 worth confirming. Inside, a loop trail of about 5 km worth confirming threads the named set-pieces – 南蛮乾门 Nánmán Qiánmén the southern gate, the 爨史 Cuànshǐ Cuan-history relief carved after the 爨龙颜碑 Cuàn Lóngyán Bēi, the 三十六计洞穴 Sānshíliù Jì Dòngxué thirty-six-stratagems caves and the 蛮王出征 Mánwáng Chūzhēng march-of-the-barbarian-king sand formations – and the 沙雕赛区 Shādiāo Sāiqū sculpture yard holds the permanent festival pieces; the old CCTV 三国演义 Sānguó Yǎnyì Romance of the Three Kingdoms serial shot battle scenes here worth confirming. A sightseeing car inside the area runs about 5 yuan a leg worth confirming, and the walking is gently steep over sand steps and metal boardwalks; wear trainers, not sandals. What it is not is 石林 Shílín: the pillars are loose sand, climbing on the sculptures is banned, and the whole place is smaller and quicker than the hype suggests – two hours covers the loop comfortably. Come for the late-afternoon light, when the sand turns warm gold, and skip noon in high summer. Reach it by bus No. 5 from outside the 陆良 Lùliáng county bus station for about 4 yuan worth confirming, or by car from Kunming in about two hours by expressway.

Timing here is about heat and light. The sand radiates hard in summer, so the county treats the place as a 避暑 bìshǔ summer outing – come early morning or after 15:00, and expect the 沙林夕照 Shālín Xīzhào sand-forest sunset, when the whole ridge glows, to be the photograph worth waiting for; winter mornings are cold and dry, but the colours read cleanest in low sun. There is little shade inside the core area, so bring a hat, water and sunscreen, and note that the lanes can be slick after rain. Pair the visit with the two 爨碑 Cuànbēi Cuan stele in a two-day circuit – the 大爨 Dà Cuàn great stele at 薛官堡 Xuēguānbǎo sits in 马街镇 Mǎjiē Zhèn Majie Town itself, an easy detour, while the 小爨 Xiǎo Cuàn little stele stands in Qujing city some 65 km west worth confirming – or with the county town’s evening market for 陆良 Lùliáng vegetables and 米线 mǐxiàn rice noodles. 陆良站 Lùliáng Zhàn Luliang Station on the 南昆铁路 Nánkūn Tiělù Nanning-Kunming line takes slow trains toward 昆明 Kūnmíng Kunming and 罗平 Luópíng Luoping worth confirming, which makes the county a practical stop on a slower eastern-Yunnan rail loop rather than a high-speed destination. All checked October 2026.
