The Inland Sea of Northern Jiangsu: Luoma Lake, Suqian

沙鸥掠水千帆远,落日熔金一湖宽 Shā’ōu lüè shuǐ qiān fān yuǎn, luòrì róng jīn yī hú kuān – Gulls skim the water as a thousand sails recede; the setting sun melts gold across one wide lake

正文:骆马湖 Luòmǎ Hú Luoma Lake is the water that gives 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City its horizon – a vast freshwater lake on the city’s northern edge, one of the largest in Jiangsu, where the land simply stops and the sky takes over. The city has built its leisure life along the shore: 湖滨新区 Húbīn Xīn Qū the Lakeshore New District strings beach parks, boardwalks and marinas along the southern bank, and on summer evenings the sand fills with swimmers, kite-flyers and families grazing on grilled lake shrimp. The lake works for a living too – part of the great canal-fed water system that moves the Yangtze northward, its fisheries and reed beds worked by the same villages that once lived off the old post road – but from the beach promenades it reads as pure horizon: water, wind, and the towers of the city dissolving behind you.

The beach parks are the lake’s front door. White sand ramps into shallows made for wading, a ferris wheel and the carnival rides stand sentinel over the boardwalk, and the lawns between fill with the specific weekend happiness of an inland city that has been given a sea. Come late afternoon the crowd shifts westward, following the sun.

The lake’s signature is the sunset hour. At the western point the water runs bronze and rose, fishing boats cross home under the last light, and the lakeside towers catch the colour like coals – the single view that explains why Suqian’s photographers keep a standing appointment with their own lake. The boardwalks and viewing platforms are free; the boats and bike hire are the only tickets worth arguing about.

Give the lake an evening at minimum, a full day if the weather holds. Mornings belong to the beach and the water-bird marshes at the lake’s quiet end, noons to the fish restaurants along the shore road – lake shrimp, whitefish and the season’s crab – and evenings, again, to the sun. In summer book lakefront rooms weeks ahead; the city’s whole population has the same idea.

Practicalities

Beyond the lakeshore, the same 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City keeps more places worth the detour: 三台山 Sāntái Shān Santai Mountain the flower-sea forest park, 项王故里 Xiàngwáng Gùlǐ Xiang Wang Gu Li the Conqueror’s hometown compound, 乾隆行宫 Qiánlóng Xínggōng the Qianlong Palace at Zaohe, or 洪泽湖湿地 Hóngzé Hú Shīdì the Hongze Lake Wetland down in Sihong – four more doors into the same 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City. Once the lake is crossed, our Suqian food map fills the table.
