儿童急走追黄蝶,飞入菜花无处寻。Értóng jí zǒu zhuī huáng dié, fēi rù càihuā wú chù xún – Children run fast chasing yellow butterflies; they fly into the rape flowers and can be found no more.
罗平 Luópíng Luoping is a county in eastern Yunnan under the prefecture city of 曲靖 Qūjìng Qujing, its county town 罗雄镇 Luóxióng Zhèn Luoxiong Town sitting on a plateau basin that borders Guizhou’s 兴义 Xīngyì Xingyi to the east and Guangxi’s 西林 Xīlín Xilin to the south. Every winter the county plants 油菜 yóucái rapeseed (canola) on a scale that turns the flats between its 喀斯特 kāsītè karst hills into one yellow field: county publicity puts the area at roughly 800,000 mu worth confirming – about 53,000 hectares – and bills it as the world’s largest naturally formed flower garden worth confirming. The flowers open from early February and peak from late February to mid-March; by late March the petals have fallen to pods and the colour turns green. Two grounds carry the reputation. 金鸡峰丛 Jīnjī Fēngcóng Jinji Peak Cluster, about 12 km northeast of the county town in 板桥镇 Bǎnqiáo Zhèn Banqiao Town, lifts dozens of conical karst 峰丛 fēngcóng peak-cluster hills out of the flower sea, while 牛街螺丝田 Niújiē Luósītián the Niujie screw-shaped terraces, about 15 km away in 九龙镇 Jiǔlóng Zhèn Jiulong Town, coil up a hillside in spirals like a fingerprint pressed into the earth. The 罗平峰林 Luópíng Fēnglín Luoping peak forest around them is one of the most continuous in southwest China, and for three weeks a year it is why people change planes in Kunming.

The honest draw is the pairing of two things you rarely see in one frame – farmland at industrial scale and a karst peak forest – and the best of it is free: the fields are working cropland, and viewpoints along the 324国道 Sān’èrsì Guódào G324 highway cost nothing. The paid core is 金鸡峰丛 Jīnjī Fēngcóng: the gate ticket is quoted at 20-30 yuan worth confirming, the 观光车 guānguāngchē sightseeing shuttle about 30 yuan return, the 小火车 xiǎohuǒchē tourist train about 50 yuan worth confirming, and the hours roughly 7:00-18:00 worth confirming. The vehicles climb to the 观景台 guānjǐngtái viewing platforms on 老尖山 Lǎojiān Shān Laojian Hill, where 1号 Yī Hào No. 1 and 2号 Èr Hào No. 2 face the sunrise and 3号 Sān Hào No. 3 the panorama. 螺丝田 Luósītián has no gate, only farmyard parking of about 10-20 yuan worth confirming. Getting there: 罗平站 Luópíng Zhàn Luoping Station, on the 南昆铁路 Nánkūn Tiělù Nanning-Kunming railway, has only slow trains – K6147 reaches Kunming in about four and a half hours for 37.5 yuan – and the faster route is a train to 曲靖 Qūjìng and a transfer to the high-speed line worth confirming; driving from Kunming takes three to three and a half hours worth confirming, and 旅游专线 lǚyóu zhuānxiàn tourist buses run from the county town for about 5 yuan worth confirming.

Plan around light and weather, not the ticket. Come for sunrise from the 观景台 guānjǐngtái, when the valley fills with 晨雾 chénwù morning mist and the peaks turn gold in sequence, and again at 17:30-18:30 for the long low light that turns the flower sea brass. Weekends and the spring-festival weeks bring heavy traffic into the area – the county runs a 油菜花节 Yóucáihuā Jié rapeseed-flower festival through the peak worth confirming – so weekday arrivals are calmer. February and March mornings are cold at the county town’s roughly 1,480 m worth confirming, while afternoons reach the low twenties; bring layers and a hat, because the plateau sun is stronger than the temperature suggests. Photographers should know the local cliché: the 南昆铁路 Nánkūn Tiělù line crosses the flower fields below 金鸡峰丛 Jīnjī Fēngcóng, and a slow train passing through the yellow sea in March is the signature shot. Two days is the honest minimum – one for the two flower grounds, one for 九龙瀑布 Jiǔlóng Pùbù the Jiulong waterfalls 22 km away or the 多依河 Duōyī Hé Duoyi River with its 布依族 Bùyīzú Buyei villages.
