The Street That Reads Like Lu Xun: Native Place

百草园中寻旧迹,三味书屋读童年 Bǎicǎoyuán zhōng xún jiùjì, Sānwèi Shūwū dú tóngnián – In the Hundred-Plant Garden you hunt for old traces; in the Three-Flavor Study you read his childhood

鲁迅故里 Lǔxùn Gùlǐ Lu Xun Native Place is the quarter where modern Chinese literature learned to walk: the restored streets of 越城区 Yuèchéng Qū Yuecheng district where 鲁迅 Lǔ Xùn Lu Xun (1881-1936) was born, learned, and watched the small cruelties of a river town he would later dissect with the sharpest pen in the language. The site knits together the Zhou family house, the 三味书屋 Sānwèi Shūwū Three-Flavor Study where he studied as a boy, the vegetable plot he mythologized as 百草园 Bǎicǎoyuán the Hundred-Plant Garden, and the 咸亨酒店 XiánHēng Jiǔdiàn Xianheng Tavern of Kong Yiji fame – four sites you can walk in one afternoon and half a lifetime of prose.

The Three-Flavor Study is the star room: the private school of 寿镜吾 Shòu Jìngwú Master Shou, its gabled desk (the one young Zhou Shuren carved his tiny “early” character into) preserved behind a rope, the hanging scroll of a leaping deer under the plaque, and the study benches where twenty pupils once recited the classics. Guides still perform the teacher’s growl; the classroom smells of old wood and ink in every season.

The Hundred-Plant Garden refuses to be less than its legend – a plain vegetable plot behind the family house where the great man found “a limitless amusement park”: the stone well rim, the皂荚 zàojiá honey-locust tree, the low mud wall where crickets sang. Visitors photograph the well like a relic, and schoolchildren recite the famous paragraph on the spot, because everyone in China learned that garden by heart before they ever saw it.

Outside the ticketed rooms the quarter runs free: the canal street with its black-awning 乌篷船 wūpéng chuán boats, the 咸亨 XiánHēng Tavern’s bronze Kong Yiji statue guarding a counter of 茴香豆 huíxiāng dòu aniseed beans, and 仓桥直街 Cāngqiáo Zhíjiē the Straight Street of Cangqiao ten minutes west for the old-town rice-wine shops. Book by ID online for the house interiors – mornings before 9 am walk straight in.

Practicalities

  • The house, study and garden are free with online ID booking; the quarter opens 8:30 am and the first tour waves hit by 10 – go early.
  • The Xianheng Tavern serves the tourist lunch: aniseed beans, stinky tofu, huangjiu in a warmed pot; expect queue lines at noon.
  • Black-awning boat rides run from the canal dock by the main street; short loop fares are posted and haggle-free.
  • Pair the visit with 沈园 Shèn Yuán Shen Garden, a ten-minute walk east – the combined afternoon is the classic Shaoxing core.

Words and Names

鲁迅 Lǔ Xùn Lu Xun, pen name of Zhou Shuren, the founding voice of modern Chinese fiction; 三味书屋 Sānwèi Shūwū the Three-Flavor Study, his childhood school; 百草园 Bǎicǎoyuán the Hundred-Plant Garden, the plot behind the house; 咸亨酒店 XiánHēng Jiǔdiàn Xianheng Tavern, the bar of Kong Yiji’s aniseed beans; 乌篷船 wūpéng chuán the black-awning boat of Shaoxing’s canals. Beyond the writer’s quarter, the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City keeps more places worth the detour: 沈园 Shèn Yuán the Phoenix-Hairpin garden, 兰亭 Lántíng the Orchid Pavilion of Wang Xizhi, 五泄瀑布 Wǔxiè Pùbù the five-tier falls of Zhuji, or 天姥山 Tiānmǔ Shān the mountain Li Bai dreamed – four more doors into the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City. Once the street has had its say, our Shaoxing food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Lu Xun Native Place is a paragraph you can walk into: a garden every child memorized, a school desk with a carved word, a tavern statue still waiting for his beans – and a town that got to keep its sharpest reader’s childhood. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Lu Xun Native Place sits at the old-town core of Shaoxing – the visitor street is free with ID booking, Shaoxing high-speed station is twenty minutes by taxi, and the quarter connects on foot with Shen Garden and Cangqiao Straight Street. All checked November 2026.
