A Prefecture That Kept Its Walls: Meicheng, the Old Yanzhou
三江口上一城老,半入江风半入云 Sānjiāng kǒu shàng yī chéng lǎo, bàn rù jiāngfēng bàn rù yún – Above the meeting of three rivers an old town stands; half in the river wind, half in the cloud
梅城古镇 Méichéng Gǔzhèn Meicheng Ancient Town is the walled survivor on 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City’s west flank – for over a thousand years this was 严州 Yánzhōu Yanzhou, a prefectural seat commanding the triangle where the Xin’an, Lan and Fuchun rivers braid together at 三江口 Sānjiāng Kǒu the Three-River Confluence, and its 澄清门 Chéngqīng Mén Chengqing gate towers still march along the water exactly as Ming engineers left them. When the prefecture was demoted to a town, Meicheng simply kept working: the 牌坊 páifāng memorial archways still span the stone streets – one archway per passing rank of sons the town sent to the exams – the old 正大街 Zhèngdà Jiē main street runs its lantern-lit evening circuit, and the city wall doubles as the town’s riverfront park.

The wall walk is the town’s front parlor: from the Chengqing gate tower the three rivers stack to the horizon, fishing boats stitch the confluence, and 乌龙山 Wūlóng Shān Black Dragon Mountain closes the northern sky. Evening is the local hour – lanterns up, families out, the gate plaza turning into an open-air living room.
Inside the lanes, Meicheng reads like an exam-success museum: archway after archway stands its inscription, the 思范坊 Sīfàn Fáng arch honors Fan Zhongyan’s stint as prefect, and the old streets keep noodle shops, sesame-pastry ovens and teahouses trading behind the stone facades. The scale is walkable and the crowds, for now, are Sunday-sized.
The town’s small museums finish the story: the Yanzhou prefecture yamen display retraces a thousand years of river administration, and the riverside explains the modern rebirth – the wall-line restoration that turned a faded county seat into Zhejiang’s most convincing open-air Ming town. Come hungry: the pastry ovens alone justify the drive.

Beyond the old prefecture, the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 千岛湖 Qiāndǎo Hú the thousand islands of Qiandao Lake, 瑶琳仙境 Yáolīn Xiānjìng the lamp-lit caverns of Yaolin Wonderland, 富春江小三峡 Fùchūn Jiāng Xiàosānxiá the ink-wash gorges of the Fuchun River, or 新安江 Xīn’ān Jiāng the seventeen-degree river of Jiande – four more doors into the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City. Once the archways have counted their ranks, our Hangzhou food map fills the table.
Practicalities
Getting there: Meicheng sits in Jiande, about 1.5 hours’ drive from Hangzhou – the wall and gate towers are free to walk, the archway lanes and prefecture display fill two to three hours, evening lantern hour is the best light, and the local pastry ovens feed the circuit. All checked November 2026.

flowcloud would say Meicheng is a promotion in reverse: a prefecture that kept its walls after losing its title, archways standing like exam results carved in stone, and three rivers that still do all the loud talking at the gate. All checked November 2026.
