草木有本心,何求美人折。Cǎomù yǒu běnxīn, hé qiú měirén zhé – Plants have their own native heart; why should they seek a beauty’s hand to pluck them?
中科院植物园 Zhōngkēyuàn Zhíwùyuán – the full name 中国科学院西双版纳热带植物园 Zhōngguó Kēxuéyuàn Xīshuāngbànnà Rèdài Zhíwùyuán Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences – is the largest and best-known tropical botanic garden in China, founded in 1959 and spread across both banks of the 罗梭江 Luósuō Jiāng Luosuo River at 勐仑 Měnglún Menglun, about 70 km southeast of 景洪 Jǐnghóng Jinghong. It holds more than 13,000 species of living plants across some 1,100 hectares of themed grounds – a 百花园 bǎihuāyuán flower garden, a 棕榈园 zōnglǘyuán palm garden, a 榕树园 róngshùyuán fig garden, a 奇花异木园 qíhuā yìmù yuán “strange flowers and rare trees” section and more – and it doubles as a working research station of the 中科院 Zhōngkēyuàn CAS, so the beds are labelled and the science is real, not decorative.

The signature plant is the 王莲 Wánglián Victoria waterlily (royal waterlily, Victoria amazonica), whose round floating leaves grow to more than two metres across and are strong enough, for a short season, to hold a small child – the garden’s summer 王莲 Wánglián photo, a toddler on a giant lily pad, is its most famous postcard. The grounds split into an 西区 xīqū West Area (the cultivated, garden-style show beds, easier and good for families) and an 东区 dōngqū East Area (wilder 原始热带雨林 yuánshǐ rèdài yǔlín primary rainforest with a 绿石林 lǜshílín “green stone forest” and canopy trails, reached by a ferry across the river). The honest plan is to do the West Area in a half day and add the East only if you have a full day and good weather, since the rainforest loop is long and humid.

Money and access are straightforward. The combined ticket is quoted around 80 yuan for the West Area with the ferry, plus a separate East Area shuttle/entry of roughly 50-60 yuan worth confirming the current split and whether a full combined pass exists worth confirming the price. From 景洪 Jǐnghóng take the 勐仑 Měnglún bus (about 1.5-2 hours, a few tens of yuan) to the garden gate, or drive; inside, electric carts shuttle the West Area and a ferry crosses to the East. The best light is morning, before the crowds and the worst heat, and the 王莲 Wánglián pads are at their peak in the warm rainy months of June to September – come then if the giant lily is your goal, come November to April if you prefer cooler, drier walking. Give yourself a full day if you want both banks; the West alone is a rich half day.
Practicalities
- Rating: The largest tropical botanic garden in China and a CAS research station (founded 1959); widely treated as a national 4A / 5A-grade scenic area worth confirming the current official grade.
- Tickets: West Area + ferry about 80 yuan; East Area shuttle/entry roughly 50-60 yuan extra worth confirming the current split and whether one combined pass covers both. Electric carts inside are paid separately.
- Address: 勐腊县勐仑镇 Měnglà Xiàn Měnglún Zhèn, on both banks of the Luosuo River, about 70 km southeast of Jinghong; 勐仑 Měnglún bus from Jinghong or private car.
- Time needed: Half a day for the West Area gardens; a full day if you cross by ferry to the East Area rainforest and 绿石林 lǜshílín.
